025.14 The ruins of an ancient castle situated on a green conical mount overlooking the Fiddich. It is supposed to have been built by Cochrane the favourite of James III: Until 1535 it belonged to the Ogilvies and then passed into the possession of the Gordons. It was surrounded by a flooded ditch also by an outer dry ditch on all sides but the east, where it is very precipitous and rocky. It was burned down in 1592 and was never fully restored again. It is now in a very ruinous state.
"The castle of Auchindune stands on a green mount of conical shape, over the Fiddich: Its situation is bold and commanding. In the central apartment of the building, there is a piece of admirable workmanship, in grand and gothic stile.
