022.01 There is a vague tradition that Wallace encamped here with his army, but nothing further, it is, however, certain that the passage of the river was contested at this point by opposing armies from the fact that crude implements of warfare having been found both here and on the oppostie side of the river, such as arrow heads, stone clubs, and a bronze dagger. On the oppostie side the remains of crude earth works are still very perfect, presenting exactly the same appearance as the object in question, which no doubt are the remains of crude earth works hastily thrown up for protection.
