003.08 | A burgh of barony, a post town, and a Seaport, standing along an estuary situated between "Redhyth Point". And "the East Head". It was erected into a burgh of barony by Queen Mary in 1550. And a weekly market, for the sale of various articles of produce was held on Saturday - this weekly market has not been held for some years. The town is erigularly built; contains near 2000 inhabitants. and contains has a Chapel of Ease, a Free Church, an Episcopal Chapel, a Roman Catholic Chapel, a Congregational or Independent Chapel. A Subscription School. and a School endowed by, by the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland. besides two or three Dames' Schools chiefly supported by Voluntary donations and Subscriptions. There is a branch of the North of Scotland Bank, and of the Union Bank. |
HARBOUR [Portsoy] | 003.08 | Portsoy is a creek of the port of Banff, its harbour is small but safe, and can accommodate vessels of 200 tons burden. A New harbour was built between 1825-8. at the expense of Lord Seafield, but it was destroyed by severe storms in the winter of 1839. The imports are chiefly Coals & bones, and the exports Grain. herring. quartz. and timber. Its Charter was ratified by parliament in 1581. The Earl of Seafield is its superior. It has no burgh property or revenue. |
