The parish of Boyndie is in the Presbytery of Fordyce and Synod of Aberdeen, the patron is the Earl of Seafield. It is bounded on the south by the parishes of Marnoch and Ordiquhill, on the west by the parish of Fordyce, on the east by the parish of Banff, and on the north by the Moray Firth. It contains about 7122 statute acres.
There are no detached portions of the parish of Boyndie, neither are there any detached portions of any other parishes situated within it.
"The surface of the parish is purely of a lowland character, rather elevated, however, above sea-level, except the fine agricultural valley through which the Boindie flows, which lies chiefly within the parish.
A fair for the sale of cattle, has been lately instituted at Ordens, in the western part of this parish, appointed to be held eight times in the year, and promises to be a great accommodation for the disposal of fed stock in the winter season."

"A gulf in the extreme north-east of Scotland; a sea rather than a bay or an estuary. Its limits as assigned by the modern hydrography of the country are somewhat various and not very distinctly understood; but on the whole, they distribute into two easily ascertained parts, an exterior and an interior. The exterior frith comprehends all the open sea south-west of a line between Duncanby-head in Caithness-shire, and Kinnaird's-head in Aberdeenshire, onward to the entrance of the inner frith between Tarbetness in Ross-shire and Burgh-head in Morayshire. The interior Moray Frith, where it opens from the exterior between Tarbetness and Burgh-head, is about 14 miles wide.
The interior Moray Frith, except in its outer skirts, presents quite a contrast to the exterior frith as to at once the wealth, the abundance, and the variety of its fisheries; and though possessing along its coasts some regular communities of fishermen, affords them such small employment that they generally resort to the fishing grounds north of Tarbetness."

The ruins of an extensive Mansion situated on a high steep cliff on the South side of the burn of Boyne. It still exhibits signs of having been a place of considerable strength and magnificence. It was unroofed about eight years ago; the hewn Stones used for building farm Steadings in its vicinity. Though it was strongly fortified, it is generally named Boyne House, in order to distinguish it from a more Ancient Castle, traces of which are still to be observed, on a bold precipitous rocky promontory on the sea coast, at the mouth of the Burn of Boyne. Boyne house was the baronial residence of the Ogilvies, Ancestors of the Earl of Seafield. [continued on page 11] |

This place is generally called "Bridgefoot of Boyndie" although some of the houses to which the name refers are in the Parish of Banff. Mr Hepburn who has been a Schoolmaster in the Parish & Forsythe who belongs to this place (the two authorities given above) added "of Boyndie" to the name Bridgefoot. Bridgefoot of Boyndie, however, is not used in contradistinction to some other place called Bridgefoot, but because the people of this parish & neighbourhood are in habit of adding "of Boyndie" to many names in the parish. |

Mr Forbes, Sheriff Clerk Banff
New Statistical Account. |
004.11 |
This name applies to some elevated ground on the north of the Old Kirk.
It is believed that an engagement with the Danes took place about here, and that the ground called Arrdanes was the position of that portion of the Danish Army which was armed with Arrows. At a short distance from here (in the Parish of Banff) is some rising ground called Swordanes, and is believed to have been occupied by another portion of the Danish army armed with swords. The New Statistical Account states that
"this parish is said to have been the scene of an engagement with the Danes, at a point near the Old Church.

An artificial embankment can be traced on the ground which probably may have been an encampment. It is, however, doubtful whether it be the remains of a Roman Camp, or not. Mr Forbes Sheriff ClerK Banff, who is the best authority I have been able to consult, considers it more liKely to be the remains of a Danish Camp. The New Statistical Account states that -
"not far from the Site of the Old Mansion house of Buchragie may be traced the huge remains of what may possibly have been a Roman Camp." |

The traces of this are very faint & indistinct, it is however, believed that a camp has been here. Another one is said to have been near the present one, but I have not been able to discover the site. The New Statistical Account in speaking of this locality says -
"Various Military Antiquities discovered here are worthy of notice, some of them perhaps, connected with the Danish Engagement referred to. To the west of the locality described in connexion with it, on the rocKy eminences on the north side of the road, two circular encampments may still be traced."
This camp would seem, judging from the faint traces of it, to have been about 90 linKs in diameter, nothing is Known regarding the second camp mentioned in the New [continued on page 40] |

"On a field lying to the north-east of the manse, and on the south side of the Banff and Portsoy

encampment." New Statistical Account. All that is Known regarding this said to be camp is,
that the place was formerly an artificial pond for water-fowl, which has since been drained,
there is very little probablity of a camp ever having existed at this place.
"In this neighbourhood, and over the district, numerous flint arrow-heads have been turned up by
the plough; many of them of a yellow Kind of flint, not found in boulders in this part of the country.
A short Roman sword was found in the bogs of Reattie, and lodged in the armoury at Duff
House." New Statistical Account

"On the field to the north-east of the manse, already described, and

states, "Was this the battle in which Indulf, the Scottish King, was
slain, A.D. 968? It took place "in Littore Boince", yet it may be fairly
doubted whether Cullen, also within the district of Boyne, has not a preferable
claim to the honour of having been the locality of that battle. More probably this was one
of the engagements under Malcolm II, contemporaneous with those at Gamrie and
Cruden. The connexion of the patron saint of the parish with that King, and the Known
taste of the latter for building churches, in acKnowledgement of his victories, and restoring
these wasted in his wars, favours the supposition, that the church of this parish, ded-
icated to St Brandon, had owed its existence in restoration to his liberality
in connexion with such an event as is supposed in its neighbourhood." |
