On the left bank of Dry Burn may be seen the remains of three Sepulchral mounds, or tumuli: They consisted of rich mould: surrounded by a considerable quantity of Small Stones and in the centre of each there was a considerable quantity of charcoal and wood ashes. A few years ago, these tumuli were defaced by James Watt Esqr. Auchenhalrig, when brining this part of his farm under the plough. They are supposed to have had some connection with a Druidical circle, which stands a short distance north W [West] of them. |

007.02 |
A stone cist or coffin consisting of large flat stones was struck by the plough, lately, in the north end of Gordon Castle Park. It was found a few chains West from the Roman Camp. Some of the stones have the appearance of having been dressed by hammer and chisel. On referring to the ground for additional information regarding the finding of this coffin the examiner states the "Only a part of the Stones were removed from the top of the Coffin, - When removing the stones the Superincumbent earth fell in and prevented the ploughman seeing what was contained in it. It was discovered a few weeks since" (Novr [November] 1868) " and is supposed to have been connected with the Roman Camp adjoining. |

It consisted of a mound of rich earth about 30 feet high and was Surrounded at the base with two rows of huge boulders some of Which are still in their original position. A Stone cist containing ashes, and black mould of a bituminous nature, and a golden Stirrup were found in it, Some years ago by one of the farmers. It has been nearly all defaced, and is now almost level with the Surrounding land. |

007.03 |
"At Upper Dallachie near the Roman Station, there remained inviolate, till 1794, a sepulchral tumulus, which is popularly called the Green Cairn; and which contained the ashes of some Roman Chief; about two feet from the surface, was found, when it was broken up, an urn of rude workmanship, which, when the ashes of the dead were shaken out, disclosed a piece of polished gold, like the handle of a vase, three inches in diameter, and more than one eighth of an inch thick. It appeared to have been the handle of a vase. As the Society of Antiquairies at Edinburgh declined to purchase this curiosity, the finder sold it for bullion at the price of thirteen guineas." [continued from page 33] the Danish Camp. Large remains of the entrenchments have been preserved. It is upon the old E. [East] bank of the Spey, and the river had then flowed at the bottom, which had occasioned the choice of the post. This camp may have been connected with the battle between the Scots and Danes, in the neighbourhood of Cullen. From the square figure of the encampment, it should rather seem to have been a Roman camp, though it be difficult to say when the Romans were here, unless Agricola might land a detachment in his traverse on the coasts of Scotland". Old Statistical Account XIV, 1795, 271.
"The remains of the Roman encampment, says Colonol Imrie, who examined it, in January 1799, is situated about half a mile north-east of the ruins of the Kirk of Bellie, on a bank, overlooking the low fluviated ground of the river. It is upon a flat surface, and has been in form nearly a rectangular parallelogram of 888 feet by 333; but, the west side, and the greater part of the north end, of the parallelogram are now wanting. I say nearly a rectangular parallelogram, as a small, though perceptible deviation from the straight line, exists in the vallum, and ditch, of its eastern side. As deviations of this kind are not frequently found, in Roman field fortifications, where there is no obvious necessity, the deviation may be considered as an objection to the camp at Bellie, when it is said to be a Roman remain; but from having examined with much attention, the remaining [continued on page 34] |

[continued from page 33] vallum, and ditch of this camp, it is my decided opinion, that this has been the work of a Roman army; It appears to one, that the vallum and ditch of this camp are nearly of the same size, and depth, as those of the camp at Battledykes, in the county of Forfar; and if I might be permitted to form a judgement, from the present appearances of the worKs, I should say that, according to my opinion, those worKs were formed nearby about the same period, and certainly by people, who followed the same general rules, with regard to their field fortifications. This much from the intelligent Colonel Imrie, in his obliging letter to me. The same ford on the Spey, which enabled the Romans to connect thier stations, in the north, during the second century, also facilitated the passage of the DuKe of Cumberland in April 1746, when he passed forward to Culloden in order to decide the fate of the Gaelic decendants of the ancient race" Chalmer's Caledonia. |

007.10 |
The principal village in the parish is a burgh of Barony, governed by a baron-bailie (The Earl of March). It has no town council nor magistrates. All Police charges are settled in Elgin. There are no markets for provisions and dairy produce; but eight fairs for the sale of cattle, sheep, and horses are held annually, by Royal Charter. The village is regularly built - near the centre is a large square, with a double row of trees intersecting it: upon this square a number of streets converge - in it there are four places of worship; Milne's Free School; a branch of the Union Bank of Scotland; one Hotel and three public houses; and it is well lighted with gas. There is also a Post Office and Post Office Savings Bank in the Village. The tenants are chiefly feuars under the Duke of Richmond. |
