The slope on the South Side is precipitous and of much greater extent than the other sides. The general opinion among the better class in the neighbourhood is that it was one of the chain or line of Early Forts the sites of which are still to be seen along the coast [namely *] |

Parish of West Kilbride County of Ayr [Page 153]The name Castle (New Stat Acct [Statistical Account]) Hill or Hills cannot with propriety be applied to these eminences separately nor are they generally Known as such, the site of Fort described in this page is Known by some parties as Herby Hill from the simple fact of long weeds or herbs growing abundantly on the top of it. Still it would be irrelevant to write it as such on the plans.
