"Torbolton or Tarbolton, also in charters written Thorbolton, the name both of the parish & village, appears descriptive of the situation of the village, & of the use to which the beautiful round hill close to which the village is built, was anciently applied. Tor means a round hill, on which Thor was worshipped. It has also a more general signification, and denotes any round hill, as is ordinarily the import of the word when applied to places in Britain. Thor or Tor of the Goths is the same God, whose name receives a different pronunciation from the Celts, forms the first syllable of the names of many celebrated persons and places, as Tarquin, Tar-entum, Tar-tary, Tor, or more correctly Thor, is the Saxon, Tar, the Celtic pronunciation of a word descriptive of the most remarkable and beautiful object in the neighbourhood, the hill, mentioned by Burns in his Poem of Dr. [Doctor] Thornbook - 'I had gaen round about the hill.' Bol is the name of the god of the Druids. Some superstitious sites, anciently [Continued] |

observed observed, in honour of this eastern gods are annually performed on the hill. On the evening preceding the Torbolton June Fair, a piece of fuel is demanded at each house. & is invariably given even by the poorest inhabitant. The fuel, so collected is carried to a particular part of the hill, where, there is an altar or circular fire-place of turf about three feet in height & is placed upon the altar. A huge bone fire is kindled & many of the the inhabitants, old & young, men & women, assemble on the hill & remain for hours, apparently chiefly occupied by observing a feat performed by the youths, who are to be seen leaping with indefatigable zeal upon the altar of turf wall, inclosing the ashes of former fires & supporting the present one. It appears from Sacred Scripture that the worship of Baal consisted in part of leaping upon his altar. 'And they leaped upon the altar which was made.' ** So that Tor or Tar, or Thor -Bol-ton or town, is the town at Baal's hill, i.e. the town at the hill where Baal was worshipped. ** In 1673 the parishes of Barnwell was suppressed, and a large portion of it was annexed to the parish of Torbolton. Hence it is that lands of Failford and the properties of Law & Brownhill, Contiguous to the monastery, all of them in Torbolton parish, are described in retours as in the parish of Barnwell."

ALMS HOUSES |
Failford Alms Houses
Failford Alms Houses |
William Cooper Esq of Failford
Trust Disposition |
028 |
They consist of a handsome building , of red freestone, in the cottage style, forming three sides of a court, and divided into eight dwelling houses. In front there is a neatly-kept shrubbery: at the back there are eight small gardens for the use of the Inmates, who are eight in number, four from each parish, and who receive a weekly aliment in money: Hitherto these alms-houses have been esteemed of advantage to the parishes interested. The building referred to has no other name than "Failford Almshouses"
The deceased Alexander Cooper of Failford, by his Trust Disposition, left certain funds to his Trustees for the purpose of erecting & endowing
these Almshouses. The parties to be admitted as Inmates are declared by the Trust Disposition to be "deserving old people belonging to the
"parishes of Torbolton & Mauchline above forty years of age, who may be reduced in circumstances and unable to support themselves xx Declaring, that no persons shall be admitted excepting such as have been five years resident in said parishes or either of them xx Declaring also, that none shall
"be admitted who at any time have been "in the habit of public begging". The two parishes are to have an equal interest in the foundation. The parties to whom the management is entrusted are the Trustees of the said Alexander Cooper, and the Heir of Entail in possession of the Estate of Failford. On the death of the last survivor of said Trustees, the management is to devolve upon the proprietor of the Estate of Failford, who is to have both a deliberative and casting vote, the ministers of the parishes of Torbolton and Mauchline, for the time being, and all such heritors in the parish of Torbolton as are infeft in the fee of lands valued in the cess books of the county to the extent of £200 scots. - Alexander Cooper died in 1829, and the Alms-houses were erected in 1837. |
