William Cooper Esq of Failford Trust Disposition |
028 | They consist of a handsome building , of red freestone, in the cottage style, forming three sides of a court, and divided into eight dwelling houses. In front there is a neatly-kept shrubbery: at the back there are eight small gardens for the use of the Inmates, who are eight in number, four from each parish, and who receive a weekly aliment in money: Hitherto these alms-houses have been esteemed of advantage to the parishes interested. The building referred to has no other name than "Failford Almshouses" The deceased Alexander Cooper of Failford, by his Trust Disposition, left certain funds to his Trustees for the purpose of erecting & endowing these Almshouses. The parties to be admitted as Inmates are declared by the Trust Disposition to be "deserving old people belonging to the "parishes of Torbolton & Mauchline above forty years of age, who may be reduced in circumstances and unable to support themselves xx Declaring, that no persons shall be admitted excepting such as have been five years resident in said parishes or either of them xx Declaring also, that none shall "be admitted who at any time have been "in the habit of public begging". The two parishes are to have an equal interest in the foundation. The parties to whom the management is entrusted are the Trustees of the said Alexander Cooper, and the Heir of Entail in possession of the Estate of Failford. On the death of the last survivor of said Trustees, the management is to devolve upon the proprietor of the Estate of Failford, who is to have both a deliberative and casting vote, the ministers of the parishes of Torbolton and Mauchline, for the time being, and all such heritors in the parish of Torbolton as are infeft in the fee of lands valued in the cess books of the county to the extent of £200 scots. - Alexander Cooper died in 1829, and the Alms-houses were erected in 1837. |
