The prevailing mode
028 A neat pleasantly Situated Country Village about a mile to the left of the Turnpike Road from Ayr to Mauchlin and about Seven from the former and on the Turnpike Road from Dalmellington or Coylton to Galston about 8 1/2 from the latter - It Stands nearly at the meeting of Six Roads and in the middle of the parish of the Same Name, the Roads are one to Galston one to Kilmarnock and one to Coylton. one to Mauchline One to Ayr (new) one to Ayr (old) the three latter are parish roads, It is chiefly composed of one narrow Street about 30 Chains long extending from north to South. The South end is mostly all of a modern erection and neatly and regularly laid out with a branch Street which is likely in the course of Some time to form a Square the Roads are laid out for this purpose and Some building erected on them All the houses at this end are Chiefly two Storeys high Slated with neat gardens attached - The north end is of a very old date especially around the Established Church the houses here generally one Storey thatched and only in middling repair. It is a burgh of barony under the Superintendance of a bailie and 5 or 6 other members who are elected Annually on Christmaseve in the Town House - It contains a population of about between 1200 and 1300 which are chiefly employed in Handloom weaving and Flowering. It has a post office, a gaswork, three churches, three Schools (one of which is private) six Public houses, and three Inns, It has an annual fair held in the month of June, a Subscription library of a long standing but on a Small scale and Small but good Gardens attached to each tenement on the whole a neat Clean thriving village beautifully placed on the north Side of Small Sloping ridge the property of William Paterson Esqr. and Several others etc etc -

The lands of Tarbolton, by a charter of novodamus, granted
by Charles II to John Cunninghame Esq of Enterkine, were
constituted into a free burgh of barony, with the power of holding
within the burgh a weekly market on Thursday, and two
free fairs annually. Two Baillies and twelve councillors are
elected by the householders on Christmas eve. A town house and
lock-up-house were erected by subscription in 1836.
