"Ochiltree is derived by Chalmers, in his Caledonia, from the British, Uchle tree, signifying the high town, or dwelling-place; by others, from the Gaelic Uchle, camp, to which tree is annexed, thereby forming Uchle -tree or Camp-tree, or from O'Chaltearan, which signifies a district of a country covered with trees of all kinds. Which of these derivations may be the proper one, it is difficult to determine; but any of them may be well applied to the situation of the place. The first name given answers to the site of the old Castle of Ochiltree, which is upon the brow of the high rocky banks of the Lugar, and the others may have arisen from a place called the Camp, and the rising ground, now occupied by the houses and gardens of the village, where there where at one time many large trees, probably of several hundred years of age. Ochiltree is bounded on the South by the parishes of New Cumnock and Dalmellington; on the east, by Old Cumnock & Auchinleck; on the north by the parish of Stair; and on

"on the west, by Stair and Coylton. Taking the extreme points, it extends about 8 miles in length, by 5 in breadth, and contains, by the admeasurement of the several estates in it, 15,387 imperial acres, or 24 27/640 square miles. The greater part of the land lies on an elevation [of] from 400 to 1000 feet above the level of the sea, with a northern exposure, forming ridges of different lengths and heights running in general east to west, and connected with flat pieces of land composed of meadow and moss. The temperature is very variable, with considerable falls of rain. The soil is chiefly of a clayey nature, and the air often damp and and chilly. It frequently happens that the crops are late in ripening, and not well filled. There are many springs of excellent water in the parish. There are two lochs - one of them abount 27 acres in extent, and from 2 feet to 20 feet in depth, and the other of smaller dimensions. They are only useful as reservoirs for cattle in very dry seasons. These lochs, which [ly] quite open with gently rising grounds around them, could be easily drained, but it may be questionable whether the land to be thus gained would repay the expense of the necessary outlay. The Lugar runs between the parishes of Ochiltree and Auchinleck; and Coila divides the parish of Ochiltree from that of Coylton. The Burnock Water and Several other Small streams or burns fall at different points into the Lugar or Coila which run into the river Ayr."

This Cave is evidently artificial, as the marks of the chisel or other instrument used in the hollowing of it out, are quite visible. Cut in a solid freestone rock which rises about 20 feet perpendicular from the water edge. The bottom of the cave is about 10 feet above the bed of the river, 6 feet high, 4 wide and about 8 long. The only way of access to it is from the top by 6 steps each 15 inch apart cut in the rock. It is generally supposed by the people of the neighbourhood that the prophet Peden lay concealed here for some time, from which circumstance the name is derived. |

Alexander Peden was born in 1626 and having become one of the
Covenanting Ministers of the Church of Scotland
(from 1666 to 1686) had occasion to secrete himself
from the violence of the times. There is also
a cave in the Parish of Sorn which he caused
to be dug, and in which he was in the habit
of hiding himself. - |

Its north, east & west Sides are about Sixty feet high, and its South Side, from where the Sloping bank meets it is about twenty feet. Whether the name is derived from its peculiar shape or from its having been the retreat of a robber is not Known. |

[Note] "Of the old Castle of Ochiltree that stood on the banks
"of the Lugar, nothing remains but the foundation; the
"stones having been taken away at different times to build
"houses & dikes on the adjoining farms."
Statistical Account (1842)
[Note] "There is," says the Statistical Account, "detached from the rock on the
"banks of the Lugar, a large stone, about 60 feet high, by 40 feet in
"length, and 20 feet in breadth, partially covered on the top with shrubs,
" heather & grass. It is regarded as a great curiosity, and called, from its
"'peculiar form, Kemp's Castle.' The name of this rock, or stone, can hardly
"be derived from its 'peculiar form' though possibly from the Scottish word kemp, to
"contend or compete. At the same time, there is a tradition of a famous robber, called
"Kemp, having at one time existed in Scotland, whose name may have been given to such
"retreats for the lawless as Kemp's Castle at Ochiltree."

A plain lofty building 3 Storeys high Slated with Crowstep gables on all other repsects a plain Common building in Very bad repair apparently going fast into ruins there is a Small patch of a Park attached which would appear to be once neatly laid out and attended to but now neglected like the house, attached to and occupying the half of the east front of the Mansion is a ruin carefully preserved about 12 feet high and divided into apartments the walls are very thick being about 6 feet - a portion of an Arched roof is still perfect from all a person would be led to believe that it was once a Castle of Some Strength it must be a long time Since it was occupied or entire as there is Some one or two large Ash trees growing on roofed arch and at other crevices at the angles Some Oak ones of not less than 100 years growth I can find no information to add to what Patterson has Stated in his history of the Shire - it may have been a Castle and it my be only a dwelling built in the Feudal times -See Mill Street for 'Camp' adjacent -the property of the Dowager Lady Boswell |

Parish of Ochiltree -- Sheet 35 Plan
Ochiltree is derived by some, from the Gaelic Uchle,
Camp, to which tree is annexed, thereby forming
Uchle-tree or Camp-tree ** This may have arisen from
a place called the Camp, and the rising ground, now occupied
by the houses & gardens of the village, where there were at one time
many large trees, probably of several hundred years of age **
A part of the village is built on what was formerly a camp,
but of its history there is little or nothing known. -

"ruins of an old castle at Auchincloich" |
Johnston's County Map
Statistical Account (1842) |
040 |
All that now remains of this is a broken and irregular mass of stone & lime. To all appearances it has once been a quadrangular building, as the remaining portions of the walls indicate, which are from 2 to 5 feet high and about 5 feet in thickness. It stands in close proximity to Auchencloigh and a small portion of it has been converted into and is used as a sheep - ree. - To judge from the huge fragments which now remain it must have been a place of great strength, but there is no person in the neighbourhood can give any information as to when, or for what purpose it was erected and though it is known by some as Auchencloigh Castle, by others it is asserted as having been nothing more than a farmsteading. |

A Stream which takes its rise from Surface water adjacent to the east base of Benwhat near the Source of the Coil, Ph. [Parish] of Dalmellington. The first two miles of its Course is the boundary between the Phs. [Parishes] of Cumnock & Ochiltree. The name is descriptive, and, no doubt, is derived from the blackish & muddy appearance of the water. Not rapid - flowing through a back Country - banks low. The name (Black Water) is applicable only from its source to its junction with Blue Boots Lane, which occurs about ¼ mile north of Burnockhead. From this place to the village of Ochiltree where it falls into the Lugar, it is Called and well Known by the Burnock. |
