"The parish of Monkton received that name from its connexion with the abby of Paisley that monastery having extensive and valuable possessions within the parish which required the residence probably and superentendence of a certain number of the monks, who in these early times, were the only class of persons acquainted with agriculture, the construction and management of mills, &c, &c. It appears from the chartulary of the Abbey of Paisley that the original name was Prestwick and that in 1163, when that abbey was founded, both the churches of the united parishes were then in existence, and both called by the Same name of Prestwick, Prestwick church being called St. Nicholas's church of Prestwick, and Monkton church, St Cuthbert's church of Prestwick. At a later date in the chartulary they are distinguished as Prestwic de burgo and Prestwic Monachorum; and at the date in 1225 there occurs casual notice of the later,- Prestwic - quae nunc dicitur villa Monachorum.*** It is not known when the parishes were united. It appears from the records of the burgh of Prestwick, that up to the year 1750, the union had not taken place.**. The records of the presbytery of Ayr bear that, in 1651, the estate of Crosby at the request of its proprietor was "disjoined |

"disjoined was disjoined from the parish of Dondonald and for the sake of being nearer to religious ordnances, was joined to Monkton. In 1688, however, it was again wholly reunited to Dondonald.** The parish formerly extended to the river Ayr and comprehended the present parish of Newton.* Newton was in 1779 erected into a seperate parish quoad Sacra.** Kyle; one of the three divisions of the county of Ayr was itself subdivided into Kyle Stewart and King's Kyle; the latter extending from the river Ayr to the river doon, had Ayr for its head burgh; the former extending from the river Ayr to the river Irvine, had Prestwick for its head burgh."

Parish of Monkton & Prestwick (united)
" Monkton and Prestwick, owe their origin to the religious houses erected at the respective villages.
The burgh of Prestwick is one of the most ancient in the county. In the original grant by Walter
the high Stewart to the monks of Paisley, as we have already seen, the church is styled "ecclesiam
de burgo meo de Prestwic" the church of my burgh of Prestwick. This was in the beginning
of the reign of William the Lion, about 1165. According to the received charter granted by James
VI., as administrator for his son. Henry duke of Rothsay, Earl of Kyle Carrick and Cunning-
-ham , Lord of the Isles, As dated 19 June 1600, the burgh had existed as a free burgh of the barony for
617 years before the period of the renewal. This would carry the erection of the burgh back to
the year 983, " far before the epoch of records" as Chalmers observes, "and still farther from
the truth!" It is well known that James VI, as well as most of the writers of his time, were inclined
to the fabulous, in reference to the matters of antiquities and there can be little doubt, that it was
indulged in to some extent in the renewal of the Prestwick charter. The burgh in all
likeliehood erected by Walter the High Stewart; and consequently styling it "my burgh
of Prestwick," was in every sense highly proper. He was lord of the northern portion of Kyle
(Kyle Stewart) and Prestwick was the head baronial burgh of the district where the
head courts of the baillery were held. By their charter the freemen of Prestwick were entit-
-led to choose a provost, two baillies, and councillors, with power to grant franchises to
several trades, to hold weekly markets, and a fair on the 6th of December the feast
of St. Nicholas the patron of the burgh. The lands belonging to the burgh extend to
about "1000 Scots acres, and are divided among 30 farmers, or barons, as they are
called, each of whom possesses a lot of arable land, and a right of pasturing
a certain number of sheep and cattle on the common."

The ruins of a Chapel dedicated to the Virgin Mary (as the name denotes) All that now remains of it, is a Tower which has been ascended by a spiral staircase, but which is now in such a dilapidated condition that it is quite impossible to reach the Summit. No authentic information can be obtained as to the exact date of its erection but it is supposed to have belonged to the middle of the fifteenth century. It stands quite close to the mansion house of the same name & commands a fine view of the Surrounding country. |

"A part of the ruined walls of Kilcais or Kincaise an ancient hospital for [instigent]
persons infected with leprosy, are still to be seen on a gentle elevation with fifty or
sixty yards seaward of the high road between Prestwick & Prestwick Toll. Tradition
as recorded by Chalmers assigns the origin of the charity to Robert the Bruce who had
been cured of an eruptive disease of the nature of leprosy brought on by his arduous
struggles and fatigue by drinking of the water of Kilcaise Well. It's probable however,
that the house existed previously as Wallace and his uncle, Schye Ronald, are descret-
-ed by blind Harry as coming to Kingcase on their way to Ayr the morning of the Blae
Parliament This hospital was dedicated to St Ninian. It was endowed says Chalmers
with the lands of Robertlone which is now called Loans in Dundonald Parish with
the lands of Shiles and Spital Shiles in Kyle Stewart and with the other lands which
cannot now be specified. The only revenue that remained to it, was the feu-duties
payable from the lands etc. For more than two centuries past, the diminished revenue
has been shared among 8 objects of charity The right of appointing these
belonged to the family of Wallace of Craigie for a long time it was purchased
about 1790 by the burgh of Ayr, which still hold this patronage" Statistical Account |
