The remains of an ancient sacred edifice, founded about the year 1244 by Duncan Earl of Carrick. Situated on the public road between Ayr & Girvan about 2 miles & ½ East of Kirkoswald village, The walls of the church and Choir are still standing to the height of 16 feet. The principal altar stood in the eastern part of the Choir. On the right of this stands the vestry-room & Abbot's ecclesiastical court-cell entire; and arched above, the roof of the latter is supported by a single column.[Curving] groined vaults intersecting each other and forming acute angles. "The Abbey of Crossraguel was founded in 1244; but the
building was probably not completed for some years afterwards.
It has long been in ruins, though great care is now taken to preserve
what remains. Abercrummie says, 'the fabryck of the Church is entyre,
without a roofe. Much of the building is demolished, yet there be
two towers still standing entyre in their walls.' It is at least 160 years
since Abercrummie wrote, and his description of the ruins might
serve for the present day. The great injury sustained by the building
seems to have been inflicted at the time of the Reformation. The Abbey
stands midway between Maybole and Kirkoswald - about two miles
distant from each. the public road from Ayr to Portpatrick passes
along the north side of the precincts. The situation as Abercrummie
observes, 'is noways pleasant' - yet it was well selected in

A coat of arms is cut upon a stone on the extremity of this range representing a chevron with a cross on the nombril point; other two crosses on the right & left of the upper edge of the escutcheon. Some of these vaults are entire, others are a mass of ruins. Three walls of a square tower at the [ ] are still standing to the height of 45 feet. On the W. running along the east of the building. The Area of
the Abbey grounds measure about eight acres. These
were enclosed, except on the south - which was bounded with a
marsh - with a stone wall of considerable strength, having
two gates, one to the south, and another to the south-west. ***
The last Abbot was Quintin Kennedy, brother to the Earl of Cassillis
well known as the author of several works, and especially by his disputa-

An old fort or Camp, having a Natural defence in a Steep Slope to the South west, and North; but to the east it has three parallel ditches, evidently artificial and in a good state of preservation. Nothing is known respecting it by the people of the neighbourhood, though no doubt it has been a place of Strength at Some remote period.

"The only antiquities of which the parish (Girvan) can boast are
"five circular encampments, generally regarded as ancient British
"strengths. They occupy the ridge of hills already described, and all of
"them command a view of the sea. One of them is somewhat remarkable
"as having two parallel ditches. These encampments, in all likelihood,
"belong to the period of the Danish, Irish and Scottish (The Scots from Argyle
"under Alpin) invasions". - Pattersons History of Ayrshire page 76.
This Camp being in the same neighbourhood will probably have
had a similar origin. |
