Revd. [Reverend] James Aitken Mr. A. Hamilton Town Clerk Mr. James Hamilton |
018 | A large Pasture Field, Adjoining the Cattle Market, enclosed by the Kilmarnock Water on the East, by a nameless Stream on the South and the Lady's Walk on the West, the Site of the Cattle Market is a Portion of this Green; it is not Known by the Authorities why the name has been Applied to this enclosure, but they Say it has been named from time immemorial. The Old People of the neighbourhood have a kind of tradition, respecting this field, which Would readily Suggest the name, they Say that it formerly belonged to an Old Gentleman of the town who Spent a considerable Portion of his lifetime in the Island of Barbadoes, and that he bequeathed it to the females of the Burgh to be Appropriated as a Bleaching Green, but Was Wrested from them at a Subsequent period. The Duke of Portland , Proprietor. |
