018 A Well known, round Circle composed of white paving stones situated at the Cross, near the end of Waterloo Street, said to perpetuate the spot where a man John Nisbit who was a staunch Covenanter, suffered Capital Punishment in 1683, the man's Initials are formed in the Orifice of this Circle by the same description of stone.

** " Kilmarnock although familiar with the
" barbarities of the Persecutors, had as yet
" beheld nor Martyr executed within its Boundaries, and it was therefore
"resolved by the enemies of the Covenant, that Mr. Nisbit should be hanged
" at The Cross, in Order that the inhabitants and those in the Neighbourhood
" might be Awed into Submission by the dreadful Spectacle .* * *
" In the 14th April 1683, he was launched into eternity, when earnestly
"Commending his Soul to the Care of his Heavenly Father; The Spot where
" the Gallows Stood is Still marked by his Initials of his name, formed
" With White Stones, at the South Corner of the Cross, and in the
" Low Church Burial Ground is a Stone to his Memory, on which
" is this inscription._ " Here lies John Nisbit, who was taken by Major
"Balfour's Party, and Suffered at Kilmarnock 14th April 1683,
"for adhering to the Words of God and Our Covenants."
