This Castle is Situated on the North Bank of the Carmel Water, about 3 miles, North of Kilmarnock. It was the Residence of the Baron of Rowallan but it is now going fast to decay and only a few Apartments are occupied by the Woodman, Robert Dale. It appears from a tablet over the door that it was erected about the year 1562, adjoining are the remains of a more Ancient edifice Supposed to be the birthplace of Elizabeth Mure first spouse of King Robert 2nd of Scotland.
The following lines, written by the Revd. [Reverend] George Paxton at one time a Clergyman of Kilmaurs, embody a tradition concerning the origin of 'Rowallan'
"A Scottish chief in days of old
As hoary-headed Sires have told,
was tossed upon the main,
small was the Skiff the Tempest blew
The trembling Chieftain urged his crew
The distan Shore to gain,
Row Allan Low the Baron cried
High on the foaming Surges ride
And bear me Safe on Shore.
A rich domain on Carmel Side
O'er hill and Vale extending wide
Is thine for evermore.
The quivering oar, bold Allan stretched,
The Solid land, the Baron reached,
And Allan won the prize,
Adorned with ropes of twisted Stone,
Long on thy banks Rowallan Shore,
And Still the Storm defies." |

"Rowallan Castle - This mansion deserted and in decay, save one or
two apartments occupied by the baron bailie, is delightfully Situated on
banks of the Carmel Water. There are different dates upon the building, which
is of a Singular construction, with various initials, and the three mullets and a
moor's head, the Arms of the family. The principal and more ornamental
part of the mansion appears to have been erected in 1562. There is, however,
the fragment of a tower of much higher antiquity, situated
on a projecting rock immediately in the rear of the
more modern building. This is supposed to have been
the birthplace of Elizabeth More, first wife of
Richard II of Scotland, and was anciently called,
no doubt from its situation, the Craig of Rowallan.
The Rowallan family were zealous Supporters of
the Reformation, and the Covenanted cause of
Scotland. Conventions were not unfrequently
held within the mansion, and one of the
apartments, in which are preserved two

"Craufurdland Castle, the interesting and Ancient Seat
of the Crawfurds of Crawfurdland, is Situated about three miles to the
North east of the town. It has been built at different periods. The
centre part of it, which is a fine Gothic structure, was erected by the
present worthy representative of the family, who is also the descendant
of the Howiesons of Braehead. The older part or tower, whose walls
are of great thickness, carries us back to a very remote antiquity."
New Statistical Acct. [Account]
"This Ancient residence has been greatly augmented by recent
additions." The Centre erected by the present proprietor, is a fine Gothic
Structure. The most ancient part of it, the Tower, is said although we
know not upon what Authority, to have been" built prior to the
days of William the Conquerer. "The walls are a great thickness &
no doubt claim a remote Antiquity. Paterson' History Vol. [Volume] 2 page 169 |

It was in one of the fields of this farm (see Trace 3) that the old 'Sword' was found, which is mentioned in 'Pattersons History of Ayrshire' Patterson in quoting that account, from 'McKays History of Kilmarnock' confuses both date and incident, he states the Sword was found in in 1825, and compiles it with the murder of Lord Soulis, whereas the Sword was found in 1845 (as Mr Clark is only 11 Years in the place) and the encounter between Lord Boyd and Lord Soulis is said to have taken place about the spot where Lord Soulis monument now stands. |

"evidence of the Skirmish which is said to have taken place between
"the contending parties, that in 1825, Mr. Clark, farmer of Knockinlaw, and
"when cutting a drain near the spot where the encounter is said to

A wooded hill situated in the Earl of Dean Castle portions of which have been recently planted with mixed wood and is the property of the Duke of Portland. It is bounded on the South by a portion of the Wall that was built by Lord Boyd round his Estate about 200 years ago. Respecting the derivation of the name I have got two accounts of it, Mr McKay thinks that is a Corruption of the word Justice Hill, as it is possible the Lords Boyd administered justice at an early period.
The other is from J.G. Parker, who says he heard that one of the Boyd family had visited Palestine and from the similarity of appearance it had to some object there he called it Judea Hill. |

There are two Square piles of the Building still standing without the roof, the walls are of immense strength and height, that of the older portion being about six feet thick.
It is the property of the Duke of Portland and portions of it are used as office houses by Mr Hunter Strauchen the Baron Officer to his Grace.
There are also some new houses, recently erected at the place which go under the name of Dean and are

"The Dean Castle stands about half a mile North
east from the town, and was the residence of the noble but unfortunate
family of Kilmarnock. It is a very ancient edifice; but no information
can be obtained of the time when it was built. In the year 1735, it was
entirely consumed by fire. This accident was occasioned by by the inattention
of a maid servant, who was preparing some lint for spinning, which
unhappily took fire, by which means this noble and ancient structure
was laid in ruins. In this situation it it still remains, and the hands
of time is slowly destroying what the fury of the flames had spared."

" consisted of a single, but strong, massive oblong tower; built
as Grose conjectures, about the beginning of the 15th Century. According
to Pont, who thus describes it, it must have had a much earlier origin: 'It is a startly, faire,
ancient building, arrysing in two grate heigh towers, and built around courteways with fyve
low buildings.' It just belonged to ye Locartts, Lordes thereof, there to the Lord Soulis, and now the
chieffe dwelling almost for 300 zeirs of ye Lords Boyde. Neir to it is the stone Crosse, called
to this day Soulis Crosse, quher they afirme ye Lord Soulis was killed. " The authority of Pont
for this statement seems doubtful, in so far that in the charter granted by Robert the Bruce
to Sir Robert Boyd, dated the 3rd of May 1316, the lands are stated to have previously belonged to
John Baliol. the probability is, therefore, that the Castle was built about this period"

This was once a Small Farmhouse it is now occupied by a Cottager, James Meikle of Caprickhill is Tenant, and it is the property of the Heirs of the late John Morton.
Holmhead was once the Residence and property of a man called Tom Rayburn or the "Ayrshire Hermit". From the account given of Tom by those who were personally acquainted with him and now residing in the neighbourhood, it appears that Tom claimed a light to pass thro [through] the Caprickhill Farm which was disputed as Tom's own land, joined the Public Road. a lawsuit ensued and was decided against him. Tom considered the decision unjust and vowed that he would never of have or change his dress till the decision was reversed, which, never occured, therefore, he continued to wear his beard and patch the clothes he wore at the time he made this vow for about 20 years to the end of his life which terminated about 12 years ago. it is supposed he died worth about [£2000]. |

"The name of this parish was formed, as in similar cases, by prefixing the Celtic Cil, or Kil, signifying a Church, to the name of the patron Saint, Marnock".
It is bounded on the north by Fenwick, on the east by Loudoun, on the south by Galston and Riccarton and on the west by Dreghorn and Kuilmaurs. Its extreme length, from E. [East] to W. [West], about eight Miles. Extreme width, from N. [North] to S. [South], about three and a half miles.
The antiquities of the parish are numerous and highly interesting and will be found described in some of the following pages of this book.
There are no detached portions of this parish in any other, nor of any other parish within this.
