"Irvine parish derived its name from the burgh of Irvine, which
stands on a rising ground". "The origin of the name is doubtful, and it is uncertain, whether this name was originally applied to the river or to the town, both being called Irvine". The parish is bounded on the E. [East] by Dreghorn. on the N.E. [North East] by Stewarton, on the N.W. [North West], N. [North], and N.E. [North East] by Kilwinning. on the W. [West] by Stevenston, and on the South by
the River Irvine
The shape of the parish is very irregular & contains [--] acres _ The antiquites are few & not very interesting - There is no portion of this
parish detached, nor is there a portion of any other within it _

An artificial Mound or Mount a little to the S.W [South West] of Lawthorn farm steading planted with Forest Trees.
Mr Dunlop of Lawthorn states that this Mount is supposed to have been a place where justice was administered in olden times. he further states that for the last 30 years there is not any alteration in its appearance. Messrs Dick of Irvine and Mr Johnston of Redburn also coincides with the above statement as far as Tradition goes not vouching for its accuracy. _

[Note] -- "The Seagate Castle" says Robertson in his
Topographical Account of Cunningham, "is a
ruinous fabric of Considerable antiquity. It belongs
to the Earl of Eglinton, and is supposed to have been
intended as the jointurehouse of the Dowager Ladies of that family. There is no date
upon it; but from the circumstance of the united arms of Montgomery & Eglinton being
engraved upon a central stone, in a vaulted chamber in the lower story, it must have been
built since the union of these two families by Marriage in 1361; and that it could not
be much later than that period, may be inferred from its structure as a house of defence, in
which are many arrow slits for bows, but no gunports for cannon or other firearms." "In
this Old Castle there remains still quite entire, one of the most perfect specimens of the Saxon or
Norman round Arch, that is perhaps now to be met with in Britain. It is erected over
the principal gateway into the house. A square tower, in one of the corners, is evidently
much more ancient than the rest of the building" * -- New Statistical Acct [Account] - Page 625
* "This is corroborative of one suggestion, that the Seagate Castle is the ancient castle of Irvine
alluded to by Hovenden" -- A note in Paterson's History - Vol. [volume] 2. Page 99 |

[Note] -- "We are not aware that any remains of Roman masonry have
been dug up at Irvine, as there was at Ayr; but it seems
extremely likely that one of their stations was fixed on the
high ground, on the banks of the Irvine, where now stands the
town. Roman implements of war, and other vestiges of their
presence, have been found in the vicinity - thus corroborating
the fact of their having continued the causeway, still traceable
at particular parts of the banks of the Irvine, all the way
till the confluence of the water with the sea." -- Paterson's History - Vol. [Volume] 2 page 82 |

appearance which the foundations

descriptive remarks of this
supposed burial ground, it
is stated "The site, as pointed

Supposed Site of a Chapel |
William Gray, "Fencedyke"
John Fisher. "Sevenacres" |
017 |
The foundations of a building, supposed to have been a Chapel have been discovered here by William Gray, Occupier of the Ground on which the supposed site is situated while excavating for drainage purposes. From the appearance which the farmer states the foundations presented, there can be little doubt the Superstructure must have been of Considerable extent. This fact, in addition to the prevailing Traditions of the locality, renders it more than probable that such a building once existed, |

The ruins which forms the Subject of these remarks were discovered some Years ago as well as portions of an old wall which were above the surface no trace of which now remains. but whether these ruins marked the site of a convent or a simple place of worship is at present a mystery to any of the living Authorities Quoted here.
Provost Campbele recollects portions of the ruins Robert Montgomery also recollects the circumstance David Grey Town Clerk and Mr Dick Treasurer but none of them will with certainty declare that the ruins represented the Site of the Convent described in the New Stat Acct. [Statistical Account] however from traditionary lore together with the name of the Well adjoining all quoted are in favor of Supposed Site of chapel. |
