017 The ruins which forms the Subject of these remarks were discovered some Years ago as well as portions of an old wall which were above the surface no trace of which now remains. but whether these ruins marked the site of a convent or a simple place of worship is at present a mystery to any of the living Authorities Quoted here.

Provost Campbele recollects portions of the ruins Robert Montgomery also recollects the circumstance David Grey Town Clerk and Mr Dick Treasurer but none of them will with certainty declare that the ruins represented the Site of the Convent described in the New Stat Acct. [Statistical Account] however from traditionary lore together with the name of the Well adjoining all quoted are in favor of Supposed Site of chapel.

[Note] -- "Before the Reformation, there was at Irvine, a chapel,
dedicated to the Virgin Mary, which stood on the
bank of the river, near to the parish church." -- Chalmers' Caledonia Vol [Volume] 3rd - page 545 - & Patersons History

"In this town there was a convent belonging to the carmelite
or White Friars". "Though not the smallest vestige of
the buildings now remain, several persons remember to have seen
some fragments of its walls a little from the south corner of the
present churchyard; and that peice of ground being now in my
possession, I lately dug up part of their foundation It stood near
the brank of the river". "Contiguous to the same spot there is a well,
still called the Chapel Well". -- Old statistical Acct. [Account] Vol [Volume] 7 page 184

[Note] -- Plan has it "Supposed Site etc -
but the authorities - and the fact of remains discovered here, leaves
no room to doubt that this spot is the Site of some building - the
question is - What building? [initialled] AMcL - see remark 14 on plan 17/13
