017 | The "Stane Castle" is at present merely an unroofed castelated Tower. of an Oblong Shape. and on the West Side of it Appears the Arm's of the Montgomerie family, From enquiries made from H. Montgomerie Esqr and other influential persons. the burial Ground, and Chapel etc as Mentioned in the Statil Accts [Statistical Accounts] of Ayr Cannot be identified on the Ground. The details Subjoined are from Hugh Montgomerie Esqr Bourtreehill "William Montgomerie of Greenfield 3rd Son of Hugh first Earl of Eglinton married in 1508 Elizabeth only Daughter and Sole Heiress of Robert Francis of Stane, with whom he got the Barony of Stane, St. Brides Kirk, and Bourtreehill. He built a castle on the Lands the ruins of which Still Exist, with his Coat of Arms thereon being the Same as those of Eglinton with a proper distinction " Stane or Stonanrig" the latter never used now. |

parish of Irvine are the remains of the Seagate and
Stane Castles" "All that remains of the Ancient
residence of Stane is a square tower of small
dimensions. It is kept in repair by Eglinton family,

" Near Bourtreehill, on the Annack, is an old castellated structure, called
Stone Castle, belonging to the Earl of Eglinton, which is said to be the
remains of an ancient nunnery, where there were a chapel, a cemetery
