This is an eminence in the eastern part of the Parish, on the farm of Allanton on which are the remains of a Roman Camp. Tradition says that it was on this eminence that Wallace with a few followers lay in Ambush for the English officer Fenwick whom he defeated. The road by which Fenwick was to pass ran along the Camp at the foot of The Beg within 5 Chains of where Wallace lay. |

On The beg and on an eminence on the opposite side of the Road which passes at its foot are remains of extensive Military Works which Tradition says are that of a Roman Camp. on the South Side of The Beg in the year 1831 was found a Roman Silver Coin with the following inscription CAESAR AVGVSTVS DIVI. F. PATER PATRIAE which goes far in the proof of the truth of the Tradition. This coin is in the possession of Thomas Brown Esqr. of Lanfine on whose property it was found |

County of Ayr -- Parish of Galston
"In the counties of Renfrew and Ayr numerous traces of
"the aboriginal inhabitants are to be Seen in the Moat Hill, the Druid
"stone, and the Encampment mound, but of their invaders, almost the
"only traces to be found which tell the passage of the Imperial Legions,
"while traversing the western districts of the Dominican territory, may
"be observed near Loudon Hill, on the borders of Ayr & Lanarkshire, where
"are the remains of what has apparently been a Roman camp, of an
"oblong form, and measuring about 540 by 340 feet. The position of the two gates may still
" be observed: this fort seems to have had a Procestrium or external work adjoining to it, such
" as we find was the case in many other instances. Near it there was found, in 1831, a silver coin of
"Augustus Caesar, Divi Filius, and many other Roman Medals have, from time to time been
"turned up in the neighbourhood. This camp stood on the direct line of the Roman Way
"from Carstairs. But we may now have retrace our steps towards the English border, and pick up
"what information can be acquired as regards the Temporary Camps which have been
"discovered in the eastern parts of what was the province of Valentia."

Roman Camp - Continued -
"The wide fortification, however, which is said in the former Statistical
"Account to have sheltered this hero (Wallace) and his handful of followers, performed this
"office to a much more numerous body of warriors, probably not less than 1000 years
"for which that celebrated people were distinguished. Its ramparts, tho' much reduced
"by time and the depredations of the husband man, may be distinctly traced throughout its
"whole extinct, and the Praetorian & Decuman gates are in a state of tolerable preservation.
"The original camp to which these remarks apply is 180 yards long by 114 broad, but there
"is another inclosure upon a lower level towards the South, which seems to have been
"added upon a subsequent occasion, to accommodate a larger force, or perhaps originally
"designed for the quarter of the allies. This addition lengthens the parallelogram to 258
"yards. It does not appear that there have been any gates at the extremity of the Principia,
" and, indeed, it is not to be expected from the nature of the ground, which on the right &
"left sides slopes downwards for 20 or 30 yards, with the declivity of a rampart. Upon one of these
"slopes there was found in the year 1831, a silver coin in good preservation, having this
"inscription. Caesar Avgustvs Divi F. Pater Patriae. This coin is now in the possession of
"Thomas Brown, Esqr. the proprietor of the estate on which the camp is situated, who is also in
"possession of another Roman coin, found along with many more, a little to the Eastward in the
"parish of Avondale, and inscribed Divvs Antoninvs. These facts and observations taken in connection [Continued] |

"connection with the existence of a Roman military way, which may still be
"traced on the opposite bank of the Irvine, furnish incontestable evidence that
"the Parish of Galston has received at least one visit from the masters of the
"world, and it furnishes a striking proof of the stupendous scale upon which
"that wonderful people conducted their affairs, that marches and encampments
"too trivial to be recorded in their military histories, have thus certified their
"own existence during a period of not less than 1600 years."

It is said Wallace lay in ambush waiting the approach of Fenwick who was conveying some provisions to Ayr. on the Summit of 'The Beg' at a point which commanded an excellent view of the road by which he was to pass. This is a Square building Situated at the north end of Barr Street, the date of its [erection] is unknown but it is believed to be very old. It is three Stories in Height and the walls between Six and Seven feet thick and has little decayed by time. it is roofed and two of the Stories are Arched. The under Story is at present used by the Small farmers about Galston now the Duke of Portlands Property for [thrashing] the middle Story as a Store room for [the] meal and the upper Story is used as a Carpenters Lumber Room.
There is a tradition in the neighbourhood that Knox the Reformer Preached within its walls.
Wright a native of Galston in one of his Poems entitled the "Retrospect" called it Lockharts Tower or Barr Castle and in another of his poems addresses it thus.
" Barr Castle tenantless and wild
Dome of Delight! dear haunt of mine!
the Shock of ages thou hast foiled
since fell the Last of Lockharts Line"
It is now called Barr Castle an is the property of the Duke of Portland. |

"In connection with these Roman remains,
"may be mentioned another military station, on
" the Galston bank of the Avon, about 2 miles further
" to the South. It is nearly Surrounded by the river, &
"fortified, where it is not so, by a rampart & ditch.
" Its traditionary name in the neighbourhood is Main
" Castle, which, as there is not the slightest vestige of a
" Castle in the modern sense of the word, involuntary
" suggests to the classical scholar the Latin designation
" of Minora Castra. In the absence of evidence, therefore,
" to establish any other hypothesis is, it may not improbably
" be conjectured to have contained a detachment
" of the Army Station on the Allanton Beg." Patersons History - |

Dr. [Doctor] Chalmers' states in his history that "The parish of Galston had its name from the Village of the same name, where the church stands; & the village, and lands, obtained their names of Galston, from some early proprietor, or settler here, call Gall to whose name was affixed his tun, or town."
The extreme length of the Parish, from Est to West, is about 9 1/2 miles, extreme breadth about 3 1/4.
It is bounded on the north by Kilmarnock and Loudon, on the east by Avondale, on the South by Sorn & Mauchline, on the east, south & west by a detached portion of Riccarton and on the west by Riccarton.
The antiquities of this parish are very interesting, including a Roman Camp, will be found described in the following pages of this book. -
There is no part of this parish detached, nor is there a detached portion of any other within this. J.C.Giles O.S. [Ordnance Survey] |
