009 ; 013 ; 014 ; 018 ; 019 A parish in the district of Cunningham, in the Co. [County] of Ayr. It is bounded in the north and Northeast by the County of Renfrew. On the east by Loudon, on the South by Kilmarnock, and on the W. [West] and N.W. [North West] by Stewarton. Its extream length about 10 Miles, average width about 5 miles.
In Patersons History of Ayr it is stated "There can be little doubt that Chalmers is correct in deriving the name of this parish from the Anglo-Saxon, Fen-wick, signifying the village at the feu or marsh. The marshy nature of the surrounding country, though now partly drained and improved, amply supports the accuracy of the derivation."
The antiquities of the parish are few, and will be found described in the following pages of this book.
There is no portion of this parish detached nor is there a portion of any other within this. [J.C.G.]
