"The name of this parish, written in old documents Dalrimpill, is derived apparently from the Celtic Dail-a'-chruim-puill, signifying the dale of the crooked pool, which even at this day, is accurately descriptive of the valley or dale where stand the church and village of Dalrymple, & it would be still more so at the time the name was given. The Doon which interseccts the level, turns & bends considerably; but anciently it was much more crooked. The outline of the old course of the river , from below Nether Skeldon till it reaches the village is still traceable - describing almost the figure S. The extent of the parish from east to west, is about seven miles; its breadth, three; & it contains about twelve square miles. It is bounded on the north and east by the parishes of Ayr, Coylton & Dalmellington; & on the south & west by the River Doon, which separates it from the parishes of Straiton, Kirkmichael, & Maybole. With the exception of the valley, where the village & church are situated, none of the rest of the parish can be termed level, for the surface abounds with numerous rising grounds, or little round hills, from the most of which are seen the islands of Bute and Arran, the peninsula of Cantyre, Ailsa Craig, & the 'lofty [continued on page 2] |

From Kirkmein, the highest part of the parish, the north of Ireland, is distinctly seen in clear weather.
There are several streamlets, but the Doon is the only river, It forms the boundary between Kyle & Carrick, & skirts the whole length of the parish. It flows from Loch Doon above Dalmellington. ** There are four lochs in the parish - Martinham, Snipe, Kerse & Linston. Martinham is the largest. It is about a mile and a half in length, and stretches a considerable way into Coylton. * Several mineral springs are to be found in the parish - particularly one on the estate of Barbieston, now incorporated with Skeldon."
The above is extracted from Paterson's History of Ayrshire. (1847)
There are no detached portions of this parish within the boun-daries of any other parish & none of other parishes in this. |

A line of railway between Ayr & Dalmellington: A railway to Maybole, called the Ayr & Maybole Junction Railway diverges at a point called the junction, on the farm of Pleasantfield.
The Ayr & Dalmellington is a double line from Ayr to the junction, and single thence to Dalmellington. The Ayr & Maybole junction Railway extending, as it does, from that point off the Ayr and Dalmellington Railway called the junction on to Maybole; is a single line of rails. The working of both of these Railways is by the Glasgow & South - Western Railway company at a certain rate per cent. |

[Note]
During the railway mania 1845/46 a line was projected to connect Ayr & Galloway by Dalmellington. Only a few miles were formed between Sillyhole & Smithston; this portion forms part of the Ayr & Dalmellington Railway, the Ayr and Galloway Railway project having been abandoned. The Capital of the Ayr & Galloway has never been all called up & the value per share is about one half the amount paid up. |

Part of the outhouses have of late been converted into a farm-steading now known as Skeldon Mains, & the other portions are in very bad repair.
