Dailly may be derived from the Gaelic Dal or Dail, a Valley which is peculiarly descriptive of this Ph. [Parish] intersected as it is, throughout its whole length by the Girvan Water. The Ph. [Parish] is about seven miles in length & varies from four to six in breadth. Ailsa Craig included in it from its having formed part of the barony of Knockgerran, now the property of the Marquis of Ailsa. The Parish in topographical appearance is one of the finest in the County - it is extensiveely wooded - abounds in minerals, such as coal, sandstone, limestone of the best quality.
The Ph, [Parish] may be said to have no political or Civil history peculiar to itself.
A large encampment - several baronial mansions the sites of two small chapels and the ruins of another a hill fort & cairns are the antiquities of the Ph. Parish.
There are no detached portions of other parishes within the limits of this parish. |

TUMULUS [Kirk Hill] |
|
|
050 |
The interior tumulus rises about 20 feet above the level of the rampart, ( which is about 3 feet high) in a mound or mash like form terminating in a flat level top of about 30 feet in diameter. On this top the inhabitants point out several oblong mounds which tradition says are the graves of some of their heroes, which must be purely supposition, and very improbable also, for at the present time there are not more than six inches of earth covering a hard reddish coloured sandstone, which appears to form the principal surface rock for the entire hill. _ Rock not [stratified ?] |

About a cart load of small stones piled on each other constitute what is locally known as "Drumochreen Cairn".
Tradition is the only information we can obtain suspecting its signification and is as follows - " The Lands of Drummochreen & Dalquharren has had a lawsuit about some of their property boundary in which the former was successful, the latter overtook him on his way home and slew him before the other had time to draw his Sword, at the place where the cairn is now erected". A red coloured Stone is pointed out which is said to lie dyed with the "Lairds blood". being which is only a sandstone impregnated with iron ore - |

Dalquharran Coal Pit produces excellent burning coals and is in good working order
The coals brought from the bottom of the pit up an incline of about 35° and 200 fathoms in length, by an engine of eight horse power. There are 30 colliers generally employed raising the coal. There are three workable seams of coal - first what is called the "main seam" and is about 7 feet and and a half thick the second is called the "parrot" and is about 5 ft [feet] thick: the third the "rotten coal" and is about 3½ feet thick but this latter is seldom wrought being so bad that it will scarcely pay the working - |

Drummellane is transfered to a seat of Mr Kennedy's (the former proprietor of the Estate) near to Maybole & the present name Drumburle was substituted. No vestige of this ancient tower now remains to mark the spot whereon it once Stood; more than 30 years have elapsed since it was [entirely] levelled with the ground, for the [purpose] of employing the stones in the constru[ction] of Kilkerran old Kennells, East of which [it] stood at the distance of 176 yards. Its [place] is still pointed out by the oldest inhabitant of the district. (It is uncertain at [what] time the Kennedies of Drummellan became a [separate] [family] Two Sons of the old Coiff or Cove (Culzean) branch of the Kennedies settled it is believed, during the reign of David [II] on the girvan water, & built for themselves strong houses or towers, the one at Barclomadean & the other at Drummellan both on the south side of the Girvan. The tower of Barclanachan [stood] on the ground now occupied by the house of Kilkerran. Drummellane tower [stood] by the river opposite to the house of Drumbaile which was at a recent period [owned] by one of the family.) Extracted from Paterson's History of Ayrshire (1847) |

Craighead Lime Works are of a very ancient date and famed for the excellent quality of their lime, and also for containing some rare geological specimens of fossils etc. A little beyond the present workings of the quarry is a "dike" of a hard blueish whinstone running east and west the Same Sort of limestone being on both sides of it. Its average width is about 11 feet, and some Geologists suppose its depth to be several miles - It has been traced from the Sea coast, to the hills above Dalmellington in many places coming to the surface |

Although in a ruinous condition is still near entire, only a small part of the s. [south] wall of the north wing of the building having fallen to the ground. It is a pretty extensive tower, constructed in the Elizabethan Style & has a combination of strength & Elegance rarely to be met with in old Castles of that era. It is about 50 feet high & is flanked by two strong round towers, one on the N [North] East the other on the N. [North] West angles of the building. The walls are three feet in thicKness & in many places covered with Ivy, which along with the dark foliage of the trees, shed a halo of antiquity & Grandeur gives [arond] it the effect of which can only be realized when seen from the [East]. The lintel stone above the main door bears the following inscription 16 KSM 79 [Monogram sketch] VT. SCRIPTVRA.SONAT.FINIS.NON.PVGNA.CORONAT.
The dwelling house of Dalquharran Gardner [Gardener] is attached to the Old Castle. The Gardens are immediately west of it South of the gardens is a small (enclosed) burying ground belonging to the Kennedies of Dalquharran & Dunure. |

"The parish of Dailly, says Chalmers 'was anciently

An old baronial mansion the residence of Sir John Cathcart. The Kitchen garden is detached from the house a little way and something like the house too it is kept in very indifferent order - A figure cut in stone stands in the centre of the garden and is said to represent the "Communion" - the flower garden is rather tastfully arranged and is indeed the only thing about the place which is Kept in any sort of repair - |

When it was built, or by whom it was destroyed, I have not been able to ascertain. It is supposed to have been one of the residences of the Cathcart Family as far back as 600 years ago, to which family it still belongs, it being the Property of Sir John Andrew Cathcart of Carleton Baronet |
