050 ; 051 ; 056 ; 057 | Dailly may be derived from the Gaelic Dal or Dail, a Valley which is peculiarly descriptive of this Ph. [Parish] intersected as it is, throughout its whole length by the Girvan Water. The Ph. [Parish] is about seven miles in length & varies from four to six in breadth. Ailsa Craig included in it from its having formed part of the barony of Knockgerran, now the property of the Marquis of Ailsa. The Parish in topographical appearance is one of the finest in the County - it is extensiveely wooded - abounds in minerals, such as coal, sandstone, limestone of the best quality. The Ph, [Parish] may be said to have no political or Civil history peculiar to itself. A large encampment - several baronial mansions the sites of two small chapels and the ruins of another a hill fort & cairns are the antiquities of the Ph. Parish. There are no detached portions of other parishes within the limits of this parish. |
