051 | Opened about the year 1810 by Sir Adam Ferguson of KilKerran; a lease of which is held by Mr Cooper farmer of Whitemill. It is wrought from a level & extends inwards to a distance of 240 yards the dip of the limestone bed is towards the north. A stratum of dark brown Sandstone overlays it which is supported by huge pillars cut out from the rock, between the pillars are large openings to admit light into the interior. A layer of clay & stones rises from the sandstone to the surface. The Limestone is of excellent quality & is burned in Kilns attached to the Quarry property of Sir James Ferguson |
