An excellent spring issuing from a Rock on the steepest part of Kirkdominae hill, it is enclosed on two sides, by a wall of stone and lime, about 6 feet high. The Rock out of which it issues being perpendicular, and about the same height as the walls, forms what may be said to be a third wall enclosing on every side but one, That is the entrance, it is surrounded by a thick patch of brushwood, but does not appear to have ever been roofed. Tradition states that it was from this well the water used at the Church services at Kirkdominae was brought. |

"One memorial of Roman Catholic days exists in the ruin of a chapel called Kirk Dominæ, and
"in a well close by it, in the rising ground behind, and approached by a regularly built archway.
"On the site of this chapel an annual fairs most inconveniently held on a Saturday." Stat. [Statistical] Acct [Account] 1842.
"Of old, however, there was a place of worship, now called Kirkdamdie, not far from the existing church. +++
"In the rear of the Kirk there is an excellent well, approached by a covered way. It is not Known when
"this place of worship was erected. It was dedicated to the Holy Trinity, and probably emanated
"from the Church of Girvan, to which parish it formerly belonged. In some of the Charters it is
"called Kildomine, and in one or two old manuscripts Kildinine and Kildamnie" ++++ "The Chapel appears
"to have been in use down to the Reformation, when, like other places of Roman Catholic worship, it
"probably suffered from the zeal and fury of the times." Patersons Hist. [History] of Ayr. |

A small patch of Arable land enclosed on one side by a fence and one the remaining sidesby wood it is situated on the side of Kirkdominae Hill, but the itself is quite level, an annual Fair was held here from 1691- from the time of the destruction of the Church - up to 1851, it is discontinued at this date in consequence of its having become ob??ious to the inhabitants of the surrounding district. The ruin of Kirk dominae stands on this piece of ground, And it is probable that previous to the demolition of the Church, it formed a portion of the Glebe Land, although tradition is silent on the subject. |
