033 | [Situation] At the junction of Mill Street with High Street. This Gothic building in High Street seen from a considerable distance from the summit of which a fine view is obtained was finished in 1832. It was designed by Mr Hamilton & cost about £1400 - It stands on the site of an old tower taken down in 1830 of which the public records bear no account but which has always been associated with the name of Sir William Wallace - A statue of the renowned Chief cut by Thom the famed sculptor of Tam o' Shanter and Souter Johnny occupies a niche in front of the new edifice - the cost of the statue was £126 - Ayrshire Directory 1851 The Wallace Tower has been built on the East side of the High Street on the site of an old building of the same name of many years standing which was taken down to make room for it - It appears to give great satisfaction to the inhabitants of the East end of the town as by its means they enjoy the benefit of a town's Clock and a bell for announcing public Worship - The tower is a handsome building and is also very ornamental to Ayr particularly as seen from a distance, its height being about 115 feet.
