"Chalmers, in his Caledonia, is no doubt correct in deriving the name of Auchinleck from the Gaelic, Ach-en-leac - the field of the flat stone. The shelving lock which abounds, particularly where the Church stands, sufficiently accounts for the designation"-
The Ph [Parish] is a narrow tract of country, about 16 miles long, from E. [East] to W. [West] average width about 2 - It is bounded on the N. [North] by Mauchline, on the N. & W. [North & West] by Sorn, on the N. & E. [North & East] by Muirkirk & on the N.E. [North-East] by Crawford John (Lanarkshire) - on the E & S.E. [East & South-East] by Kirkconnel (Dumfrieshire). on the south by New and Old Cumnock, and on the S.W. [South-West] and W. [West] by Ochiltree.
The antiquities of the parish are not numerous - and will be found described in the following pages of this book.
There are no detached portions of this parish in any other, nor of other parishes within this - |

Near the head of Aird's Moss, is to be seen
the monument erected to the memory of Richard
Cameron, who was here overtaken and slain by the
dragoons, on 20th July 1680. It consisted till lately
of a flat stone with his own name, and the names of
the other individuals who were slain along with
him, inscribed upon it. A more conspicuous
Memorial of his life and death was reared some
years ago from the proceeds of a collection
made at a Sermon delivered near the spot.

"There appears to have been another

The objects known by this name Supplied is the track of a ditch or moat together with an elevated oblong Ridge adjoining Dornal farm steading. The ditch is not traceable on South Side of plantation. The appearance of the place would lead to the Conclusion that in olden times it was a place of strength evidently fortified however nothing very conclusive can now be gleaned on the matter. There is a stone in the dwelling house bearing date 1692 |
