257 A large and plain built edifice being the snd Charge and the church where the English portion of the peole belonging to the Parochial Church worship (The large Gaelic church on the adjoining [--] is the 1st Charge of which the Rev. [Reverend] Mr. Russell is Minister). The interior is well [--] up with pews and galleries sufficientlt commodious for about 1150 sitters. Mr. Greenlees & Macintosh say that it is handed down by tradition that this church is built upon the site of an ancient Castle, hence the name "Castlehill Church".

"There are 2 parish Churches in one of which Gaelic is preached & in the other English. The former is capable of accommodating 2000 sitters & the latter or Castle Church situated where once stood a Castle of the Lord of the Isles contains 1000 to 1200.
