... as having a rugged and boisterous coast, a wet and stormy climate, and a rough unpromising tractless surface redeemed by fine spots in sheltered valleys or at the head of bays and the bolder inlets of the sea. It has several fresh water lakes the largest of which are Loch Frisa in the north, Loch Uisg in the south, and Loch Ba near the head of loch na Keal. The island though singularly poor in Antiquities contains three interesting examples of the semi-ancient fortalice - The Castle of Aros overlooking the Sound of Mull in the vicinity of the Cognominal hamlet - Duart Castle looking up Loch Linnhe - and the Castle of Moy standing in the vicinity of the modern mansion at the head of Loch Buy. The chief trade of the island is centred at Tobermory, which is its only town and there also are its seats of justice and its principal civil institutions. |

A large island in Argyllshire, and of all the Hebridean islands is third in magnitude. It is separated from the Scottish Mainland by the Sound of Mull on the N.E. [North East] ; on the E. [East] by the Firth of Lorn and is washed on all other sides by the Atlantic Ocean. So much is Mull indented by Bays and Marine Lochs that though measuring in extreme diameter not more than 35 miles it possesses a Circumference along sinuosities of its coast of upwards of 300 miles. Its greatest length w.s. westward from Duart Point opposite the southern expremity of Lismore to the small headlands on the Sound of Iona is about 30 miles. Its greatest breadth is a line from the northern extremity over the summit of Ben More to a point below the farm of Scorr in the Ross of Mull is about 25 miles. Mull may be summarily Characterized |

This object is situated in the wood close to the side of the public road leading from Salen to Ulva etc, & at a part thereof about 1/4 of a mile N.E. of Kellon & about 2/3 of a mile S.W. from Killiechronan. No information can be obtained as to the period at which this place was used as a Burial Ground; but there can be no doubt that it was used as such previous to 1668, as the recollection of its existence was almost lost in the locality until it was revived a few years ago by the number of human bones found there after the ground had been torn up by the action of trees which were being dragged through it out of the wood. |

Here is an interesting combination of Gaelic and English: The place is called Knockantivore, with the Gaelic Name "Cnoc an Tighe Mhòir " scored out. The Gaelic name features in the previous description however.
The shepherds house was apparently known by the knoll upon which it stood.
In the Authorities we see an Anglicisation of the name for the dwelling of Mr Charles McLean: Tomslea for "Tomsleibhe" |
