188 This name applies to three prominent mountains situated on the south end of the island of Jura - better known in the locality as "Beinn a' Chaolais", or "South Pap", "Beinn an Òir" or "North Pap" and "Beinn Siantaidh" or "East Pap" - "Bainn an Òir" and "Beinn a' Chaolais" are of a conical form and rise very abruptly to a height of nearly 3000 feet, "Beinn an Òir" being the highest, "Beinn Siantaidh" is considerably lower than either of the other two and of a more irregular formation. They stand almost in a line from N. E. to S. W. [North East to South West] and are connected by low watersheds. Those mountains produce little or no verdure, and present to the eye Enormous piles of huge stones and rocks placed on the top of one another in the utmost disorder.
