104 | Iona, a small but celebrated Hebridean Island, containing a post office of its own name, and constituting a part of the quoad sacra parish of Iona, within the quoad civilia parish of Kilfinechen & Kilvickeon in Argyllshire. Iona is about 3 miles long from north-north east to south-south west, about a mile broad, and about 1,300 Scottish acres in area. It lies about 3/4 of a mile west of the south western extremity of Mull, 9 miles south-south west of Staffa, and about 36 miles west of the nearest part of the Scottish mainland". Extract from Imperial Gazetteer of Scotland. The island contains a School and two churches - the Established and Free. There is also a small village on the shore of the Sound which has a post office and three public houses holding beer licences only. |
