Situated near the mouth of Sloc na Maoile on the S.E. [South East] side of Nave Island, is the ruin of an old chapel. About the year 1785 the walls of this ruin were repaired, the addition shewn on the south side built and a tall chimney stalk, (which is still standing) built in N.E. [North East] corner of the ruin, for the purpose of making Kelp. No information can be obtained relative to this object prior to the above date, beyond that it was disused and in a ruinous state before that period. It is believed, generally, to have been originally established by a disciple of St. Columba about the eigth [Eighth] or ninth century, but this is mere conjecture. There is, however, no doubt that it is very old. |
