An old fortification, which tradition hands down as having been used by the "Danes". It is positioned on an eminence on a rocky point jutting into the sea & about one mile north of the "Dun". It has been Seemingly of ordinary strength, the wall (as near as can be given) measuring about 9 feet in thickness; the outer side in some parts being well defined. A few yards to the north is something like the foundation of a strong wall, between a couple of small rocks, which is supposed to have been part of the defence. Some years ago most of the stones were removed for building purposes. Sign. [Signification] "Cragag's (as pronounced) Fort" - But C. McIsac's one of the above authorities thinks the name to be taken from "Crag" a hand; meaning the fort of many hands |

On the shore below the farm house of "Cretshengan" on the top of the highest point of a bold rugged range of precipitous rocKs, is the site of a Stronghold, which was of the ordinary strength. About 40 years ago most of the stones were removed for the erection of stone walls on the farm of Cretshengan. & on their being removed a considerable amount of money bearing the reign of Queen Anne was found, the Coins being about the size of the present Current two shilling piece. A little to the south of it is to be seen the foundation of a building & from its retired position there is little doubt as to its Connection with the "Dun" Tradition says this fort belonged to the "Danes" Sig [Signification] Fort |

A small but neat built Castle with four
round towers on the four angles of the third story with one on the centre of east & west sides - the property of John Campbell Esqr. of Kilberry, being built on the side of the ancient
Castle which was supposed to have been destroyed by an English pirate. A stone found in the ruins of the south wall and now built in the wall of the present Castle about the main door bears the following inscription "Plundered & burnt by
Captain Proley an English Pirate 1513" "Rebuilt by J.C. 1844".
An old brass bell in the possession of Mr. Campbell about 15 inches in diameter at mouth and about 12 inches deep & which local tradition asserts to have belonged to a monastery at one time near Kilberry Castle but no trace of it remains. it is supposed to have been used afterwards in the Chapel, it still gets the name of "St. Berry's Bell" theres no inscription on it & similar to the bells used in Country Churches.
The Castle is situated on the west side of a clump of very large trees & nearly 1/2 mile N.W. [North West] of Keppoch farm house and about a mile S.W. [South West] of Cuilghailtro.
"In the last century there was a Castle at Kilberry near the Parish Church.
It is said that about 40 years ago there existed at Kilberry a bell, called
St. Berry's Bell with the saints name inscribed". "Origines Parochiales." |

back of the hill called Sron a' Mhionnan, and their chief donned the dress of a begging Minstrel, and proceeded to reconnoitre the camp of the the McIver's. In this garb he was not recognised and as his ballads and music afforded them amusement, he was well treated by them. After having taken what observations he wished for he departed, but during the night while they were sleeping he descended with his party and commenced a great slaughter, so that in a very short time all the McIvers were killed, except two who took to flight. These were pursued one of them overtaken and killed about 3 miles from the place, and the other who fell into a stream near Tarbert was there killed. The stones are said to stand on the places where the chiefs of the McIvers fell. About 40 years ago when the then proprietor of Carse was having the ground near by drained, the workmen discovered a helmet, curiously inlaid with gold, and also several ornamented sword hilts, all of which were sent to the Antiquarian Society of Edinburgh. |

Earrann Chlann Imhear or "the portion of the Clan Iver". It derives this name in consequence of the bodies of portion of the Clan Iver who were slaughtered as before described having been buried here. Several years since when the proprietor of Kilberry prohibited burying in the graveyard close to his home, the natives had and still have to use this one. There is no record of its having been a burying ground before the McIvers were buried in it. Some years ago when the river was in a high state of flood it washed away a portion of the earth at the north east end and several people still living saw a great number of sculls and bones appearing on the bank which would tend to prove that there must have been a great number massacred. |

In a hollow a short distance South east of the summit of Ardminish hill are to be seen the remains of a chapel situate within the precincts of what is said to have been the burial ground. The walls of the Chapel and burial ground are now nearly levelled. No tradition remains except that is was used as a place of burial by the inhabitants of Gigha and Islay. There are no outward appearances of any graves except a small cairn now also nearly levelled near the north east end of the Chapel.
"Monuments of primitive Christianity are numerous in Argyllshire but nowhere more frequent than in South Knapdale. Of these pious relicts there are four ancient Chapels which have suffered but little from the rust of time".

On Cnoc Breac there is a fort the wall of which can be traced completely round the Hill, being particularly distinct on the western side. It seems to have been a place of great strength, the walls being (where very plain) between 10 & 12 feet thick. There is no tradition or any information relating to it to be found amongst the inhabitants, except that it was a fort. |
