breadth, tapering off at the North and South portions to about 2 miles broad. The area of the parish occupies about 9000 acres, chiefly cultivated. The soil is generally good, and where lying upon rocky beds is very superior. There is very little wood throughout the parish, and it is entirely void of Hills. Granite and Limestone are the prevailing formation. There is a (Grey) Granite Quarry on the farm of Milltown of Allathan, giving employment to a few workmen. There are two Villages in the Parish Viz. Udny and Pitmedden the latter is situated about 2 miles North East from Udny Village and 14 miles, North from Aberdeen, and consists of about thirty houses together with the Free Church, Free Church School & Manse. The Free Church was erected in 1865 by Voluntary Contribution and has accommodation for 500 people. The school was erected in 1859. Udny Village contains about 20 or 30 houses, together with the Parish Church, Parish School & Manse, & an Inn. Some years ago an Academy was in existence here, but it is now in desuetude. About 1859 A primitive dwelling or Erd House was discovered a little to the South of Pittrichie House, resembling the shape of a horse shoe. It was paved with stones neatly fitted together on the floor & roof and contained bones. |

Another Erd House was discovered in 1850, About a quarter of a mile North West of Mill of Torry. It measured 60 feet in length, by 5 feet in breadth, and 10 feet in height. It also Contained Charcoal, and rude pieces of pottery, pieces of flint and an ornamental bracelet was found. On the Farm of Cloysterseat, the Tenant thereof has from time to time, discovered & carefully retained a great variety of ancient silver and copper coins, together with Ancient remains and Curiosities of a primitive people, evidently belonging to the Stone period: Viz : Stone Celts, Stone cup, whorls, Quernes, Stone spear heads, Balls, spherical, and grooved or divided into discs or bosses, Arrow heads etc. nearly the whole of which can be seen in the Cabinent of Mr Temple of Cloysterseat. Some of them belong to Charles I & II time Queen Mary's, James III, George I & II. Robert Bruce's name Robertus can be easily decerned on one side of Bruces coin & on the other a Scottish Thistle, Mary has a lion rampant on one side & the letter M on the other,
There are two coins marked "1797" and having the word "Montrose" written on one side with a bridge & large river flowing under, and at a distance the town of Montrose; on the other side is a woman spinning. Also in his possession a twopenny piece of George II reign, & a great many more too numerous to mention, they can all be seen at his residence at Cloysterseat. |
