The parish of Tough is in the Presbytery of Alford, and in the County and Synod of Aberdeen. It contains about 7112 Statute acres and is bounded on the north by the parishes of Alford and Keig; on the east and south east by the parishes of Monymusk and Cluny; on the south by Kincardine O' Neil and part of Lumphanan; and on the west by the parishes of Lumphanan and Leochel and Cushnie. A low ridge shelters its interior from the east, the south and the south west; and swells and rising grounds elsewhere give it a rolling surface, but are mostly arable. The soil is, in general, light, in many places shallow and stony; but in some very deep, and, though mixed with moss extremely fertile. Those hills which are not under culture make excellent sheep-walk; and the barren moors and dry soil are mantled with plantations of fir.
There are no detached portions of Tough parish nor are there any detached portions of another parish situated within it. |

This is a large block of Granite apparently in its rough natural state, (unknown), when viewed from a short distance it presents the appearance of a monstrous wedge, standing on end, it being 3 feet broad, at the base but gradually widens towards the top, when it is about 4 It is about 2 feet thick, the whole, height; and 10 feet high; there is probably 4 or 5 feet of it underground, to balance what is above, so that it may remain upright, Its surface is concave towards the South & convex towards the North, and covered with a hard crust probably the accumulation of centuries. "It is supposed that a Son of Macbeth's, named Luath, was buried under or near it. he being slain after retreating from the battle of Lumphanan," see statistical acct. [account] Luath was slain in Essie & buried in Iona.

[Note beside 'North Tillykerrie'] - I have given this spelling on the authority of the minister, Revd [Reverend] Alexander Milne, & of the Val [Valuation] Roll. There is no doubt it is now the recognised spelling but I think it is a corruption. We have Tuly Kery in 1444 & 1468, Tulliekeirie 1638 & Tillikirie. These last two indicate the penult. [penultimate] long, which it is not now. I think Tillykerrie must be adopted as representing the CS. [Common Speech] & spelling. [Initialled] JMcD |
