STONE CIRCLE [Mains of Fornet] Druidical Temple
Druidical Temple
Mr George Mitchell, Craigendary
Mr Archibald Strachan, Letter
064 This temple stands on a wooded eminence a little north-west of the Mains of Fornet, It is near the margin of the plantation and consists of three irregular blocks of stone, two of which are standing upright and one lying on its side slightly imbedded in the ground. The upright ones are 7 feet high, 4 broad and 2½ thick - the other is 6 feet by 4, and the cause given for its fallen position is that some years ago the workers on the estate were proceeding with its removal for building purposes intending to take the others also until stopped by the proprietor. There are but very few who can give any information about this object. and there is no reason for believing that the stones were ever more numerous than at present.
