Statistical Account
Fullarton's Gazetteer |
044 ; 053 |
A parish in the district of Garioch, Aberdeenshire, bounded on the north by Insch, on the east by Oyne, on the south by Keig, and on the west by Leslie parish. The principal stream in the parish is the Gaudie which cuts it into two unequal parts; the southern portion being the western extension of the Bein-na-chie range. The northern portion is nearly all arable and in a state of fair cultivation. The principal village is Auchleven, containing an Inn, Post Office and Merchant's Shop, but the Established church and School are in the small village of Kirkton. Its existing antiquities are very few, the only ones of any note being a small artificial looking hillock called the Castle Hill, and the old Castle of Licklyhead. Flint arrowheads, Stone axes, Stones Cists, Urns, and other remains of antiquity have been found in considerable numbers, and the sites of a few Stone Circles can still be pointed out. The principal proprietors in the parish are Henry Lumsden Esqr., Pitcaple Castle, Col. [Colonel] Leith Hay, Leith Hall, and Theodore Gordon Esqr., none of them being resident.
Note. There is no portion of this parish detached, nor portion, or portions, of any other parish enclosed within the boundary of this parish. |

About 25 years ago, Mr Peter Cowie. farmer of Overhall, trenched Out the foundation of what was generally considered to be an old Grave Yard, The former tenant removed most of the earth and used it as manure, and from time to time great quantities of bones were turned up and removed. In the immediate neighbourhood of the Chapel, are a great quantity of fine building stones, built into the dikes. Mr Cowie cannot account for them in any other way than their being part of the old Chapel. The land immediately south and east of the Chapel is of the finest Kind in the parish, and the site is exceedingly well sheltered and secluded. It appears that the ditch shewn on trace has been cut right thro. the centre of the Chapel, for on examining the north face of the ditch at the place marked as the site, was found, what was considered to be the foundation of the north side wall; This band of stones extends about thirty feet east and west. The extent of the Grave Yard is quite distinct, and in looking at the portion of ground which is shewn as the site of the Chapel, it is quite evident that a chapel at a former period stood here. Tradition says that a Chapel dedicated to St. James stood on a slightly elevated ground about ½ mile west of Overhall, and about ½ mile north east of Westfield. Here also stood a stone Circle, but it was removed about 25 years ago, by Mr Peter Cowie. farmer of Overhall. |

The mansion house of Overhall property stood quite close to the present farmsteading which was partially built with the old materials. No trace of the old house now remains, nor is its date of erection known, but from a stone, bearing the date of 1662, built into the wall of the present building, this may have been the time of erection. But this is only conjecture. Property of Theodore Gordon Esqr. |

A small village in the parish of Premnay, situated a little west from the centre of the parish and at the foot of Benachie. There is nothing of any note connected with it though the old castle of Licklyhead is close to it. There is also a small mound in form resembling the Bass of Inverurie, which stands in the village but no authentic information can be procured respecting it. It is called the Castle Hillock, though I can't understand how it derived that name unless it be from the Castle of Licklyhead. The village contains a Carding Mill, (corn) Mill, Grocers Shop, Smithy &c. Stone Cists and Urns have been found near the village. It is a small straggling village composed in general of very inferior houses. |

Revd [Reverend] John Wilson |
044 |
A circular embankment, generally about 2 feet in height and 5 or 6 feet broad at the base, on the summit of Tillymuick, pretty perfect in some places and considerably worn down in others. It is so situated on the hill, that from any point of the embankment the whole of the valley in any one direction is visible. Near the centre is another small circular embankment. As this place is considered by some persons to have been connected with the Romans, the centre circle is supposed to have been set apart for the use of the commander or Cheif. The Revd [Reverend] John Wilson is of opinion that it has been only an extensive cattle fold, into which they were driven in dangerous and lawless times. The old Aberdeen and Garioch Road passes this place, but if the Roman Road did, no person in the district is aware of it. A number of Tumuli have been opened near the camp, when improving the land, containing sometimes bones, and sometimes flint arrowheads and black earth.
NB. This is evidently not Roman: it so resembles however the old British Camps, so abundant in the Country, that - I have described it as such in the Plan: - The enclosure is nearly 200 yards in diameter.

An idea of the size of the altar stone may be formed from the fact that seven land rollers were made out of it. |

Druidical City |
Donean Tourist |
053 |
At Gariochford is the remains of a Druidical city, surrounded with a ditch, one of the circles is nearly 171 feet in circumference, having an ally of about 50 feet, communicating with another circle on the south east, of the same dimension. From these two springs a walk about 57 feet in length, leading to the grand temple, where is a perpendicular stone about 8 feet in altitude, 3 in diameter, and in density 2½. About 60 feet from this is another Circle, nearly 180 feet in Circumference, having more upright stones. Donean Tourist pages 277, 278.
The perpendicular stone spoken of in this extract as being "8 feet in altitude, 3 in diameter and in density 2½" is all that now remains of these Circles - other information cannot now be got in the district respecting them, but the sites of cairns to the number of 7, may go so far to confirm the theory that this was a "Druidical Village". |
