The Town of Peterhead stands upon a peninsula or headland projecting into the German Ocean, and forming the most easterly point of land in Scotland. It was erected into a burgh of Barony by George Earl Marischall in 1593. It continued a part of the estates of the Earls Marischall until the attainder of the last Earl in consequence of his accession to the Rebellion in 1715. It was then purchased by the York Buildings Company, who sold it to the present proprietors, the Governors of the Maiden Hospital Edinburgh. The municipal government is vested in twelve councillors, who from their own number, Choose a provost, three bailies, & a treasurer. Peterhead possesses many advantages in a maritime point of view, of which it has largely availed itself. It has for many years sent more vessels to the Greenland and Davis' Straits seal and whale fishing than any other town in Great Britain. The herring fishing is also prosecuted here with great spirit. The town is built of red granite, said to be similar, in Colour and texture to the Egyptian syenite, being composed of quartz, short, and felt spar. It is a Parliamentary Borough and has a population of about 9,000 souls. |

OSO. [Ordnance Survey Office] Aberdeen
18th. May 1868.
Sapper White.
Please find out if Peterhead
be a Municipal Burgh as
well as a Parliamentary?
If it be, try to get either a
Plan, or a written description
of it, so that we may show
the Municipal Boundary
on our plans. If the
2 Burghs be co-extensive
it will be a very good job.
The Town Clerk will know.
E.H. Courtney. Capt [Captain] RE [Royal Engineers]
O.S. [Ordnance Survey] Peterhead
19th May 1868
Sir
I most respectfully beg
to state that I went to the
Town Clerk this day, and
asked him if the Burgh of
Peterhead was a Municipal
Burgh, and he says it is,
and the 2 Burghs* are co-
extensive. I asked him
for the plan but he is not
willing to give it, though he
has given me permission
to make a traceing of it,
which I intend doing tomorrow.
The only written document he has,
he gave me to copy - copy sent herewith.

This well is in a niche of the wall, on the road leading to the Manse, to which there is access by a stone stair. The name originated from the water having been at one time much used by the inhabitants, for domestic purposes, and chiefly for Tea, on account of its softness. Since the erection of the Reservoir in town it remains neglected. |

Very little can be gathered to identify this with the name. In Buchan's Annals which is somewhat traditionary it is called the "Unknown Grave" and although the field is occasionally ploughed, it remains untouched.
Some say that many years ago, two persons named Cairn & Trodle fought a duel in which one or both were killed and buried in this spot (hence the name of the suburb Cairntrodlie) over which was heaped a Cairn of stones. A few years ago a Mr Ross of Cairntrodlie shaped it like a grave and planted it around with willows in which form it remains at present. The average of my informants consider it a myth. |

"The ruins of two Castles, both of which were once the property of the Marischal family, are still to be seen in Peterhead. One of them was situated on the Keith-inch, and the other which appears to have been of a more ancient date, was Situated at the North end of the Longate, and the corner of Brook Lane, where part of it is still to be seen" Vide Arbuthnot's History of Peterhead page 80. The ruins of an old Castle on the North end of the Longate, supposed to be built by one of the Earls Marischal prior to 1593. However be this as it may, it was long frequented by the family of Marischal and resorted to as their place of rendezvous, being kept up (though almost in ruins) as an Inn by John Robertson, Commonly called Yokieshill, from which the plot adjoining takes the name. The stone with this inscription was placed in a house of more modern date , which is to be seen to this day, "They Say, and what Say they? Do you well, and let them Say" Vide Buchan's Annals of Peterhead page 12. A portion of the walls of this building are yet standing and the ruins of what is said to have been the stables etc. adjoining The name Yokieshill would not now be known to the inhabitants of Peterhead. |

"The earliest notice of these harbours is in the Charter of erection already mentioned in that document the Earl Marischal binds himself "to build ane bulwark at the mouth of the haven called Port Henry." This bulwark was accordingly erected by his lordship, and is that now used by the fishermen in the Ronheads for landing their boats. Although built in apparently rough manner, with blocks of undressed granite it has rarely stood in need of repair, and after more than two Centuries and a half, the original Oak mooring posts are still in a serviceable state. This harbour is capable of holding Six or eight vessels of a hundred tons burden. It is not calculated for a heavier tonnage", Vide Pratt's Buchan page 65. "The harbour in it, called Port Henry, hath its name from one Henry Middleton in Clerkhill, who in the said Earle George his time, was instrumental under the said Earle to have this erected from an open shore to a secure harbour, and it hath been, by the care and pains of the late Earle William and this present Earle George, brought to what it is now, to receive all from North East and South to their great advantage and Security both in Storm and Calm." page 360. "When the number of feuars amounted to thirty persons, they were obliged to build a Tolbooth or pay 200 merks to the Earl for building it. They were further obliged to erect a bulwark in the mouth of the haven called Port Henry (now the north harbour) "for easement of their Seafaring vessels and shall accomplish the same half a year after the said Earl hath received grossums of twenty tenants" Vide Buchan's Annals of Peterhead page 11. |

"In 1807 the late Mr Rennie furnished a plan and estimate for extending the South harbour and for building a new North harbour, but nothing was, at this time, done to the North harbour. In 1815, the Harbour Trustees adopted measures to raise the funds necessary for the completion of the North harbour, and the formation of a graving-dock. Mr Telford gave in a report and plans for the work, and the harbour was commenced in 181? but in the following year, while it was yet in an unfinished state, a tremendous storm arose , which totally destroyed all that had been done. The commissioners, however, immediately set about raising additional funds to repair the damage. The work was recommenced and in September 1822, according to Mr Telfer's plan, but the harbour still being open to the Sea from the North, a pier was begun in that direction, and soon after completed. The South and West piers of this harbour, including the new Dock (from plans arranged by the Harbour Trustees themselves) was finished in part in 1840, and completed in 185? Harbours.
There are two harbours the North & South. The North Harbour was formerly called Port Hendry and the South Harbour the Sackit-hive. The basin of the South Harbour contains 5 acres, its depth is 14 ft at high water. Spring tides; the bottom is nearly level; there being only 3 feet difference between the Channel and the upper part of the harbour. The basin originally contained only half an acre; it was secured by a small quay to the South, and the vessels lay in a Sandy bight under shelter of it. About 80 years ago during a violent gale a herring buss that was then in the harbour having broke loose from her moorings was driven upon the rocks where the West Quay is now erected and quarried them up as she went along; this first gave rise to the idea of deepening the harbour which was immediately commenced and the West pier soon after built, about this time the mound was raised, which connects the Keith-inch with the town. The vessels increasing in size and number, it was found necessary to have something done towards enlarging the [continued on page 82] |

Harbours - [continued from previous page] harbour; but as the town had not funds of its own adequate to the undertaking, this made application to Government, and also to the Governors of the Merchant Maiden Hospital: they also received contributions from several individuals, the whole amounting to £4,000. The foundation Stone of the South pier was laid in July 1774 by George Earl of Errol, and was finished in 1781. The West pier was begun in 1782, and was not completely finished till 1813. The harbour has been much improved by the erection of these Quays, especially the South one. The outside of the old South Quay, which was opposed to the Sea, was of a convex form, so that if vessels attempted to take the harbour with a S.E [South East] wind, they were generally thrown in at the back of the West pier and wrecked. The form of the present South Quay is the reverse of the old one, being converse towards the Sea, which is undoubtedly the most proper plan as there has not been an instance since it was built of a vessel being put past the mouth of the harbour, unless she had been previously rendered ungovernable; but on the contrary we have often had the pleasure of seeing vessels make the harbour, when according to all probability the thing was deemed next to impossible. The length of this Quay is 480 feet greatest breadth 42 feet height from the base to the top of the parapet 26 feet, the breadth of the entrance between the piers is 90 feet. The principal defect of the South Quay is owing to its having been built of too small stones, and part of the West [continued on page 83] |

South Harbour - [continued from previous page] end of it not having been founded upon the Solid rock; the hearting or packing of it is als [also] very indifferent. A Jetty or small quay was erected nearly at right angles to it, which stood but a very short time, being all demolished in the course of one tide; and the whole of the materials of which it was composed were thrown into the Channel, which decreased its depth of water at least six feet, this happened in 1783, and although there were a number of people employed every stream ebb, yet so slow was the progress that in 1793 there were not above 200 tons got up, In January 1793, the South quay received considerable damage; the tide being higher than usual, and the wind blowing in a direction that threw the waves upon the Centre of the quay in one tide upwards of 300 tons of the pavement and cribs were thrown into the harbour; and as the breach was once made, the whole of the quay very narrowly escaped being demolished. Upon this four Commissioners were appointed with full power to use their utmost exertions in order to get the back of the quay properly secured. This Committee appointed Mr James Arbuthnott Junr [Junior] to act as Engineer. Mr Arbuthnott made a complete alteration in the machinery which was formerly used about the harbour, and also invented several machines, which were found both useful and economical [continued on page 84] |

South Harbour - [continued from previous page] [History of Buchan by Rev. [Reverend J. Pratt, Cruden] p.65 "It is not certain when the South harbour was first formed, but it seems not to have been much frequented in the beginning of the last Century- the whole revenue arising from it being only £71.6.0 Scots (£5.19.8) and was only capable of containing a few vessels of small size. It would appear, however from the following Singular facts, that the importance of the Peterhead harbour was not considered to be contemptible. In the Year 1705 an Act of Privy Council of Scotland was passed, authorising a voluntary contribution for repairing the harbour of Peterhead, to be made throughout the three Lothians and all north of the Forth. Again in 1729, an Act of the Convention of the Royal Burghs was obtained in favour of the town of Peterhead, for a voluntary contribution throughout all the burghs of the Country for the repairing of these harbours; and in the Year following, the Ship Masters of Leith and merchants of Edinburgh gave an attestation of their great public utility. The Town Council of Edinburgh authorised a collection to be made in all the churches of the city and its neighbourhood on behalf of the same - the result of which was £240.14.6 Sterling; and so great was the interest felt [continued on page 85]

South Harbour - [continued from previous page] [History of Buchan by Rev. [Reverend J. Pratt, Cruden p.65] felt for the repair of these harbours that in February 1740, an Assembly was held in Edinburgh in aid of the other collections for this purpose. IN 1771 the piers of the South Harbour had again fallen into disrepair, and contributions from various sources were obtained in aid of their restoration. Plans were furnished by Smeaton, and the building according to these plans was commenced in 1773. In 1807, the late Mr Rennie furnished a plan and estimate for extending the South harbour and for building a new North harbour. Fifty thousand cubic yards of rock were excavated from the bottom of the South harbour, and an addition of about 200 feet made to the West Pier; but nothing was done at this time to the North harbour. |

Applies to a dock or harbour for Shipping situated between the town and the island called Keith Inch and having its entrance from the South Bay of Peterhead and connected by the Junction Canal with the North Harbour, it is defended from the sea by the South and West piers and has very strong quays all around, which form Bridge Street on the North, the Ship Row on the East, and a part of Harbour Street on the West of it; the channel is 90 feet wide and has a depth of 14 feet of water at high spring tides. The harbour is upon an average 17 feet deep from the top of the quays, it is mostly frequented by the smaller trading vessels and Colliers, the large ships generally going into the North Harbour where there is more accommodation for them |

"It is not certain when the South harbour was first formed, but it seems not to have been much frequented in the beginning of the last century, and was only capable of containing a few vessels of small size. In 1771 the piers of the South Harbour had again fallen into disrepair, and Contributions from various sources were obtained in aid of their restoration. Plans were furnished by Smeaton, and the building according to these plans was commenced in 17[?]". vide Pratt;s Buchan, page 66. " The foundation Stone of the South pier was laid in July 1774 by George, Earl of Errol, and finished in 1781. The harbour has been much improved by the erection of these quays, especially the South one. The outside of the Old South quay which was opposed to the Sea , was of a convex form. so that if vessels attempted to take the harbour with a S.E. [South East] wind, they were generally thrown in at the back of the West pier , and wrecked. The form of the present South quay is the reverse of the old one, being convex towards the Sea, which is undoubtedly the most proper plan. The length of this quay 480 feet greatest breadth 42 feet, height from the base to the top of the parapet 40 feet." Vide Arbuthnot's History of Peterhead page 16. |

"There was also built on the Southermost part of Keith-Inch, a Castle, by George Earl Marischal, in the beginning of the Sixteenth Century, and from a model of the palace of the King of Denmark. Since it began to decay, and till of late years, it was used as a granary and storehouse, but owing to it's decayed and ruinous state, it was thought expedient to pull it down, and it's place is supplied by boilyards for oil, and magazines for the accommodation of the different Greenland fishing Companies which are now in a very flourishing state" vide Buchan's Annals of Peterhead 1819, page 12. In Pratt's Buchan page 58 it is stated that this Castle was, "built by George, Earl Marischal, in the beginning of the Seventeenth Century," and "It was pulled down in the early part of the present Century, and it's site is now occupied by the Watch-house and other buildings belonging to the Coast-guard". The Lifeboat-house is believed to be part of this old Castle, and from the appearance, and thickness of the walls, this would seem to be quite correct. |

"There were formerly two batteries here the Meikle and the Little Battery; the former commanding the South, and the latter the north bay, upon the site of the Meikle Battery formerly stood a small fort" surrounded by a moat & "mounted with seven brass Cannon, taken out of the St. Michael, one of the Spanish Armada, which was wrecked on the Coast in this vicinity, some guns, of a smaller size, which had belonged to the same vessel, were mounted upon the Tolbooth Green, in 1715, on the landing of the Chevalier, for the defence of the interior of the town. These with the guns in the fort were, soon after this event, taken to London, the Government, no doubt thus wishing to mark its appreciation, of the encouragement the "Pretender" had here received" vide Pratt's Buchan page 60. There are only three large guns, here at present and the battery, which is in the form of a half moon was erected about 1780 and is now used by the Artillery Volunteers etc. |
