085 A one storey farmhouse with steading, all slated and in good condition. The tenants of this house pronounced its name as written here, but said that it was often named Oldtown. Mr Allan thinks that the mode adopted is most preferable. [Situation] Property of Alexander Forbes Irvine Esq.

085 This well is named, in the Old Stat [Statistical] Account, Norman's Well, and is said to be "a large fountain close to the eastern rampart of a Roman camp. Instead of being "a large fountain" it is a Small well obscurely situated underneath a stone wall. The well is known by the name Norman Well, but Mr Allan, who is considered the best authority on antiquities of this parish and who has written about them, will not agree to its being called so, as it has seeded from the erroneous idea that the camp near which it is situated was a Norman instead of a Roman camp.
