065 This name applies to a cavern situated on the north side of the Hill of Elrick. It is about six feet wide at the mouth, & appears to have been cut through the solid rock for a considerable distance, although at the present time it is filled up with clay & stones a few feet from the entrance. "It is supposed by the vulgar to have penetrated for miles underground, and is celebrated in their legends as the residence of a noted robber and his gang. He was slain by an ancestor of the Johnstons of Caskieben; and the weapon employed upon that occasion still forms part of the Arms belonging to that family" (See Old Statistical Account.) Some believe it to have been an excavation made for mining purposes.
