A Parish situated in the Eastern Division of Aberdeenshire, it is bounded on the North by the parishes of Aberdour, Tyrie and Strichen. On the North-west by King Edwards parish, On the West by Monquhitter, On the South and South West by Methlick, Tarvis and Ellon parishes, and on the East by the Parish of Old Deer.
"New Deer was originally a part of the ancient parish of Deer, from which it was disjoined not long after the revolution. It is termed in the ancient records, Auchreddy, from the name of the land in which the Church is situated. This name is engraved on the communion Cups and Plates with the date 1694. Like other Scottish names, it is of Gaelic origin, as are many other names in the parish such as Auchoach, Auchmaliddy, Auchnagatt, Auchmunziel.
It is one of the largest parishes in the County of Aberdeen. Its greatest length from north to South is upwards of 14 miles. Its greatest breadth from East to West upwards of 8½ miles. Its contents upwards of 50 Square miles. -
With the exception of the hill of mormond, New Deer is the highest ground in Buchan. No part of it, however, rises higher than 200 or 300 feet above the level of the sea. ***
There are no streams that deserve the name of rivers in this parish, the Country being in general flat and all Arable."

Applies to an old castle situated about two miles from New Deer, which appears to have been a place of considerable strength, It was surrounded partly by a fosse. & partly by a morass. So that there could have been no access to it by a Causeway. It is now Crumbling to decay. I have ascertained recently that there is an old stone removed from the Castle some 40 years ago, now at Alehousehill bearing date 1257 which is thought to be the time it was built. The portion of the walls now remaining are about 30 feet in height and 6 feet in breadth.
"The plan of the Castle had been an incomplete square of fifty four feet, with a space of thirty feet by sixteen wanting at the north-east corner. The south-west corner is razed to the foundations, eighteen feet of the south wall, and fifteen of the west, being entirely gone. The corners are not angular but rounded off. The walls are of great thickness, occupying half the area of the site, ** Although much has been demolished, a great portion of this building remains."
Pratt's Buchan
"Two miles North of the Village Stands the Old Castle of Fedderat, now a complete ruin, nearly all the best stones have been taken away by the farmers for building. It appears to have been once a place of Considerable strength. It now stands in the middle of a field. A morass, now drained Surrounded it, & the only access to it was by a causeway & a draw bridge. There is no tradition as to when it was built, but is said to have been one of last strongholds of James 2nd's partisans who after the battle of Killiecrankie possessed themselves of Fyvie Castle & being obliged to abandon it

013 |
A large and commodious building the property and residence of Mr Fordyce M.P. [Member of Parliament] for the County of Aberdeen.
"It is not known by whom, or at what time the original portion of the Castle was built. It consisted of a round and rather high tower, forming a staircase with some small apartments opening onto it. There have been at least four additions made to the original building. The particulars of the first are unknown; the second was made by Mr. William Dingwall in 1765; the third by Mr John Dingwall in 1814; and the fourth by present proprietor.
The earlier additions were made, chiefly with a view to increased accommodation; but the last with the same object, comprised the important design of converting [Initialled ] the whole building into the old Scottish Castellated Mansion, combining the grandeur of the middle ages with the elegance of the present. This has been successfully accomplished and Brucklay Castle is now one of the most magnificent edifices in the district.

Applies to a couple of large stones a remnant of past ages, "It was a rocking stone of great bulk, but movable at a particular point, by the slightest touch, By whom or for what purpose, these rocking stones were poised, is matter of vague conjecture, It has been supposed they might have been used as stones of ordeals by which the Druid or Scandinavian priest, pretended to test the guilt or innocence of persons accused," it is sunk deep in the ground, Situated at ½ mile S [South] of N. [North] Auchmaliddie.
Extract from Pratt's Buchan
"Remains of Several Druidical temples are to be seen. The place where one of them stood is about ½ Mile North from the church (New Deer) and still retains the name of 'Standing Stones'. In view of this, and about a mile from the Church directly South, there was another This is not yet all removed, and the former was but lately taken away to lay the foundation of the present Manse."

Cummineston
16th November
1870
Sir
The following information may be
added respecting the name "Old Maud Castle" (21-6. Trace 1)
Immediately east of the farm
Steading of "Place Croft" (21-6.Trace 1.) the remains of an apparently artificial mound
or plateau is seen, The formation of the Buchan Railway having destroyed the
main portion; while constructing this railway, the foundation of a building was discovered
situated about centre of the aforesaid mound, and, to which, according to tradition, was
formerly the Manor Place, House or Castle of Old Maud. The fact of this farm being
called Place Croft would tend to point to its having been a Manor Place. No mention is
made of this name ("Old Maud Castle") in Pratt's History of "Buchan." nor in other works as
far as can be learned. The term "Old Maud Castle" is not in general use in the locality.
Although used by a few. As portion of the mound remaining, and features surrounding, are
over.

[Continued from Page 99A]
Somewhat prominent & remarkable, and of an antiquated appearance, Perhaps 'Castle' (Site of) without the prefix Oldmaud'. would be the better term, it being situated in the Den of Oldmaud and the name Mains of Oldmaud occuring a four Chains west. Tradition hath it that the Earls Marischal at one period resided here. No dates can be obtained.
