A parish in the eastern division of Aberdeenshire, it is bounded on the North by King Edward parish, on the East by New Deer & Methlick, on the South by Fyvie, and on the West by Turriff parishes respectively.
"The name Monquhitter Signifies the place for ensnaring the deer, and was derived from the farm on which the Church was originally built. From east to west the parish extends about 8 Miles and from South to North about 10½ miles. The Surface is generally of an undulating and monotonous character. The parish Church is conveniently placed for the greater part of the population, being close to the village of Cuminestown, and not more than a mile from the village Garmond, it is Situated upwards of Seven miles from the most distant part of the parish, but since the erection of the Chapel of ease of Millbrix in the parish of Fyvie, which was built in 1833 for the accommodation of remote districts of Monquhitter & Fyvie, there are few houses more than three miles distant from one or other of these places of worship, The parish Church was built in 1764 but in a very insufficient manner, and is now in considerable disrepair." A superior farmhouse & offices. The property of the Rt. [Right] Hon. [Honourable] James, Earl of Fife. It derives this name from a castellated residence which formerly stood here, was of no historical note. A stone in one of the Offices bears the date "1716", said to be the year of its erection. It had no connection with the family seat of the proprietors of the Auchry Estate. Tradition States that it was built & occupied by one Patrick Con, who, having erected the Castles of Delgaty, and Craigston, received a grant of land from the proprietors of these Castles, they being unable to pay him in money for his work. upon this grant the said castellated residence stood, not a vestige of which now remains |

A well known name applied to field, situated about 20 chains north west of the farmsteading of Lendrum. Deriving this appellation from the tradition that here terminated the sanguinary conflict between Donald of the Isles and the Thane of Buchan, and traditionaly called the "Battle of Lendrum", here, various portions of warlike weapons from time to time have been discovered. "In Forsyth's Beauties of Scotland we read that - "In this parish of Montquitter, is said to have been fought a great battle against Donald of the Isles, supposed to be brother to Malcolm Canmore. The battle was fought at Lendrum for three days, against the forces of the north commanded by the Thane of Buchan who was of the royal party. The battle of the first day was fought about a mile to the east of Lendrum, where a number of small tumuli marked the graves of the Slain, and from whence Donald was beat back to the Camp, the situation of which, called "Donald's Field" (20.9.) is still to be seen. The battle of the Second day was fought hard by the camp of Donald. The third and decisive battle was fought to the west of Lendrum, upon a field of more than six Acres, which tradition covers with gore." "Pratt's "Buchan"

Continued
"The only battle of consequence that distinguishes this parish (Monquhitter) Seems to have been fought at Lendrum. Tradition (in this instance pretty distinctly) relates that Donald of the Isles, Supposed to be Donald Bane, brother to Malcom Canmore, fought at Lendrum for three days against the forces of the North, Commanded by the potent Thane of Buchan, whose principal inland residence was at Castletown, King Edward parish, about 4 miles distant from the bloody Scene. The battle of the first day was about a mile to the east of Lendrum, where a number of Small Tumuli mark the graves of the slain; and from whence, Donald was beat back to the Camp, the Situation of which called Donald's fold, is still shown. The battle of the Second day was fought hard by the Camp of Donald; and there more than an Acre of land is crossed with large tumuli. The third and decisive battle was fought to the West of Lendrum, upon a field of more than 6 Acres which tradition covers with gore. The Thane of Buchan, at the head no doubt of the Canmore faction, prevailed; and the usurper Donald, after losing most of his forces, was obliged to fly. In the beginning of the present century, a tenant found in some of these tumuli, some pieces of iron, which his greedy spirit converted to use. The present tenant broke up some of them, but found nothing that deserves notice. Perhaps it may be amusing to trace the influence which Superstition still has on many minds, and to mark how much some prophecies tend to their own completion. The Corn growing on the bloody butts of Lendrum has never been reaped without blood or strife among the reapers. This circumstance asserted by tradition and confirmed by the living evidence of two respectable men who have rented that farm for more than half a Century past, may be easily accounted for by the trepidation or the furor, which, according to the respective constitutions of the reapers, is inspired by this awful Scene."

About centre of this field, [see above] distinct traces of a cairn of stones may be seen, which, is also called The General's Cairn, in Pratt's Buchan it is Termed "Donald's Cairn" The latter appellation is not recognised in the locality, where the tradition of the "Battle of Lendrum" is strong. The battle is described as having lasted three days. The battle of the first day being fought on what is now the farm of Lower Brownhill (19.12.trace 6). "Here, till lately, the memorials of a terrible carnage, still spoken of as the "Battle of Lendrum," were preserved. A barren heath on the farm of Brownhill was thickly studded with mounds and small cairns. The tenant, in bringing this heath under the plough a few years ago, removed these hillocks, in many of which he found pieces of corroded iron, and other evidence of the conflict." Pratt's Buchan. The battle of the second day was fought in the vicinity of this field, and that of the third day ending in the defeat of Donald at The bloody butts of Lendrum (see 19.11.trace 3). The site of the cairns on the farm of Brownhill cannot now be identified. |
