046 "A post-town, a market town, and a *[see note below] burgh-of-Barony, in the parish of Meldrum, Aberdeenshire. It stands on the road to Banff, 5 miles North, North-East of Inverurie, and 17½ North, North-West of Aberdeen. Its Streets are very irregularly built, but they nevertheless contain a number of good houses. The inhabitants appear to possess a considerable spirit of enterprise, they are chiefly Merchants, professional men, tradesmen, and laborers. There is a good weekly Market for provisions; and during the Winter and Spring months, there is a fortnightly Market for the sale of Cattle and grain. There are also two Animal Fairs in May and November. There is a Distillery, a Brewery and also several corn mills in the vicinity. The Town was erected into a Burgh-of- Barony in the year 1672, but has not now any local Magistrate. There is in it the Town Hall, a respectable looking edifice, suited to the size of the place, four Churches, four Schools a Mechanics Institute, two Branch Banks, a post office, police station &c, and a number of excellent shops. There is also carried on a considerable trade in leather, and it has long been celebrated for its Turnip Seed. The Streets, Shops, and dwellinghouses are lit with gas. population about 1600".

Parish of Meldrum

[Note below OLDMELDRUM] : Should be on plans in Character for Market Towns. The boundary of the Burgh is not on plan - if we had the boundary, the name might be in Character for Burgh, not returning members - but as there is no boundary - it is merely a market town. [Initialled A.McL]
