022 | The Estate of Luduquharn derived its name from this, (Lud's Cairn) No vestige of this Cairn remains; the whole of the stones having been carted away about 12 years ago for building material; In the removing of which, no Antiquity was discovered. Tradition hath it, that the above Cairn was erected in Memory of "King Lud," a Danish King, who encamped about here, when on his March to Cruden, where he and the Scots had a battle in which it is said the latter were defeated. People of intelligence whom I have spoken to respecting the spelling of "Luduquharn," all spell it Ludquharn. It is only the proprietor & the Valuation Roll who spell it Luduquharn. The former is a very old man, & he might not have detected any thing wrong when revising the Authenticated List. |
