About 150 years ago a cairn stood in the centre of this enclosed wood, supposed to have been erected by the shepherds of the surrounding neighbourhood, where they met once in the year & held games etc. such as wrestling. It is from this word that the name is derived, "tawie" (Scotticism) to throw - wrestle.
