A parish situated in the Cromar district of aberdeenshire, Is bounded on the north by Towie, East by Tarland and Migvie, South by Coul and Glenmuicktulloch and on the West by Strathdon parishes. Its length from North to south is about four miles, and from East to west about Seven miles. There is a small detached district of Tarland and Migvie, running southwards from about the centre of the northern boundary two miles and is about 1½ miles in breath. The surface of the parish is very undulating, and a great portion of

of it is under the plough. A very complete specimen of a double chambered Erd House is extant, situated about a quarter of a mile to the South west of the Mill of Migvie, and near to the public road. In shape it resembles a Semi-circle, the western chamber measures in length about twenty five feet, and in breadth measures two feet at the door and gradually expanding to seven feet. The other chamber contains the fire place and measures in length 8 feet by 5 broad at the farther extremity of the chamber. It was discovered in 1862. There is a good specimen of a Sculptured Standing stone standing in the churchyard of Migvie, measuring six feet in height. On one side is rudely carved the figure of a cross, and on the other a man is represented riding on horse back. This is the only sculptured Stone that can be discovered up to this date in the parish. There are the remains of a few Druidical places of worship throughout the parish still to be seen.
"The parish of Logie Coldstone is principally situated in Cromar a district of aberdeenshire comprehending part of five parishes, and forming an extensive ampitheatre amid that range of mountains and

and hills, which run between the Rivers Dee and Don, for a considerable part of their course. At some remote period, a great portion of this District, Seems evidently to have been the site of a large lake or chain of lakes (two of which still subsist) fed by several rivulets, which now wend their way sluggishly through it, occasionally inundating the lower grounds to some extent, when swollen by much rain, or by the sudden dissolution of the snow, which falls abundantly on the surrounding hills during the Winter. Since this vanished lake burst the barrier which confined it on the south, several tumuli or mounds have been formed in different places of its site, by the drifting of the finer particles of sand which covered its bottom, while the flat ground around them consists generally of coarser gravelly deposits interspersed with patches of peat bog. The parish of Logie was annexed to Coldstone in 1618. When a separate Parish, it appears to have been generally called Logie-Mar, to distinguish it from the other parishes into which the word Log, enters as a Compound, such as Logie Buchan, Logie Pert. The etymology of Coldstone (formerly written, and still pronounced, Colstane by the inhabitants of the district) cannot be determined with any degree of certainty.

certainty. On the west side of the parish a range of steep And high hills runs the whole distance, among which Morven stands Conspicuous, Commanding a view to the east as far as the eye can reach. The climate of this parish with the exception of that part which lies on Deskry side is tolerably mild, equable, and Salubrious One of the lochs alluded to as still subsisting in the district is partly in this parish. It is called Lochdavan supposed to be a corruption of the Gaelic Loch d' abhainn, "lake of two waters, and is about two and a half or three miles in circumference there is a small circular pond upon an elevated part of the farm of Nether Ruthven which bears the name of Lochan-uaine "the green pool or lakelet", from the peculiar colour of the water. The only stream of running water of any magnitude connected with the parish is that of Deskry, which forms a boundary line for some distance betwixt it and Strathdon. The other rivulets in the parish, in Common with those of the whole district of Cromar, discharge their water into the River Dee in the parish of Aboyne. Two different farms in the parish have received the name of Cairnmore from the existence of large Cairns or piles of stone within their boundaries. One

One of these Cairns situated about half a mile north of the manse of Coldstone, must have originally been of remarkable size, for though it has, according to the report of the inhabitants, furnished materials for the erection of several enclosures in the neighbourhood, it still stands Conspicuous. Upon the farm of Parks of Coldstone, and on a spot of ground which, though now drained and improved, has evidently been a morass, there is still to be seen a deep and wide moat Surrounding a slightly elevated area of about an acre. * No vestige of this can be now traced.

On a rising ground a short distance South from the Church there stand the remains of a castle there is part of the wall at the West end. the greater part of the foundation can be distinctly traced as shown on tracing, when erected or when demolished cannot be ascertained in the neighborhood the only thing known is that it is said along with the Castle of Coul to have been the occasional residence of Durward a Crusader.
"About 300 or 400 yards south from the church of Migvie may be seen, on a small eminence, the ruins of a Castle, the quondam property and residence of the Earl of Mar, and where the feu duties of the proprietor of Blelach, in the Parish of Logie Coldstone, were appointed by his charters to be paid annually to the superior. At what period this Castle was reduced to ruins cannot be ascertained. Its site is now all under green turf: but it might be an object worthy of the attention of the proprietor. Mr Farquharson of Finzean, to excavate the ruins, and expose its original plan and dimensions." Statistical account. |

This Standing Stone was found in the Churchyard of Migvie, a few feet below the surface at the spot where it now stands, in the year 1861. It is a stone about 6 feet in height with an elaborately carved figure of a cross and a number of concentric circles on one side, on the other there is a rude figure of a man on horseback, supposed to represent Durward a celebrated Crusader who lived at Migvie Castle & Coull Castle. that is a local supposition. |

This name applies to two chalybeate spring wells, situated at the North side of the approach leading to Blelack House, They are said to be superior to the Wells of Pannich, but on account of being on private property, are not much frequented. It is an anglicized gaelic name, which means "black pool" |

A small hollow, in a stripe of fir plantation, at the side of an old road, situated about a quarter of a mile N.E. [North East] of Logie Coldston parish church. It is said to have been the residence of some of the Picts, but no remains are to be found which would lead to the supposition of it ever having been inhabited by the people from which the name is derived, excepting the fact of the ground being hollow underneath. |

Camp (Remains of supposed to be Pictish) |
Revd [Reverend] J. Wattie

081 |
This is supposed to have been a Camp, of some kind or other, from the ditch which surrounds it, bearing a striking resemblance to those usually seen around ancient fortifications. Considerable doubts exist, however, among authorities, with reference to its origin, and some of them are inclined to doubt, whether it ever was a camp; seeing that nothing but the ditch, part of which is defaced, would lead to the supposition. It has however, been inserted on traces on the evidence of the Revd [Reverend] Mr Wattie, who is considered a good Authority on such matters, and I would feel inclined, judging from its situation and appearance, to coincide with him in his supposition: But as nothing is known with regard to it further than the resemblance which the defaced ditch bears to similar objects to be met with around Ancient fortifications, it would perhaps be better to cancel it altogether on account of the differences which exist regarding its origin among Authorities. A large stream issuing out of the lower end of Loch Davan; it forms the boundary between the parishes of Logie Coldstone and Glenmuick Tullich and Glengairn; also between the latter parish and the parish of Aboyne and Glentanner; but it only receives this name from the above loch to where a stone marked A.B. stands on its left bank situated immediately below the farmsteading of Monandavan, after which point it receives the name of Dinnet Burn to where it empties its waters into the River Dee at the Mill of Dinnet. |

A fine spring well situate at the farmsteading of the same name. Though it bears a canonized name, yet it is neither a holy well nor an antiquity. It formerly went under the name of "Clurie Well", but the present proprietor changed the name to St John's Well, calling it after himself.
