005 These are the remains of an Ancient Castle which stood on a small rocky eminence. Close to the crossing of the "Burn of King Edward" by the old turnpike road from Banff to Turriff. there is nothing know[n] of its origin or occupation further than it belonged originally to the once powerful family of the "Comyns" Earls of Buchan. It appears from the thickness of the remaining portions of the walls to have been a very strong place.
The family of Comyns came into Scotland, among other Norman Lords in the retinue of King David the first they rapidly rose to wealth and power their career being at once brief and brilliant. They figure in the history of Scotland for nearly two centuries, their power being suddenly extinguished by forfeiture, banishment, and proscription
