If this stone could be seen above the water, the passage was considered safe, if covered it was dangerous to attempt crossing. |

[Reverend] John Davidson's possession it seems that an old road crossed the river near this, but not at How Ford, and crossing the river Ury immediately north of the Bass passed on to Caskieben. No trace of this road exists. |
