Insch Mr. John Gartley Insch 034 ; 035 ; 043 ; 044 The parish of Insch is irregular in shape, and is situated about 27 miles north west of the City of Aberdeen, in Aberdeenshire, it is about 5½ miles in length and about 4 in breadth and about 1 mile in its narrowest part. There are one or two hills of note in this parish. first we have the Hill of Foudland in the north part of the parish, rising to a hight of about 1100 feet above the level of the sea, and from its summit a beautifil view of the How of the Garioch is obtained, it is also noted for its famous Slate Quarries, The next hill is Dunnideer, a conical hill, situated about 1½ miles west of the Village of Insch, it rises to an elevation of about 600 feet and is celebrated for the remains of a vitrified fort and the ruins of a square tower or castle of Dunnideer, the late Sir Andrew Leith Hay. K.H. [Knight] &.c. of Rannies gives a very fine description of this in his Castellated Architecture of Aberdeenshire. In addition to the Castle of Dunnideer there are other antiquities of interest. The Wardhouse of Dunnideer appears to have been a place of greater note then the Castle itself. there appears to be authentic accounts of the date of its erection, Sir Andrew Leith Hay, writes "In a ravine, to the westward of the Castle, formerly stood the "Wardhouse" of Dunnideer, erected probably for a twofold purpose, that which its name denotes, and also as an outwork on the most assailable point, by which enemies, in those days, passing to the Garioch from the [continued on page 2]

Insch Mr. John Gartley Insch 034 ; 035 ; 043 ; 044 [continued from page 1] from the north or west, were accustomed to travel. Nothing of the masonry of this fabric now remains, but its locality is strongly marked by a fosse which has surrounded it. Although no historical information regarding Dunnideer appears to be extant, some record is preserved with reference to its "Wardhouse", from which it would seem, that the later had continued a place of strength long after the Castle had ceased to be habitable. In the history of the Gordons, it is mentioned that, in the year 1647, young Leith of Wardhouse garrisoned the house of Wardhouse for the King, but was compelled to surrender it by The Parliamentary Generals, Middleton & Leslie, who appear to have visited the delinquency of its Garrison by a very different mode of treatment. "The Scots in the house were set at liberty; but there were sixteen Irish taken in it, all of whom, with the Captain who commanded them were hanged" Cas. Ar. [Castellated Architecture] P [Page] 22. Art Dunnideer. The whole of the masonry of this building was removed about 100 years ago, for the purpose of building the present house of Wardhouse - in the parish of Kennethmont. There are two stones of note in this parish, the Picardy Stone on the farm of Myreton, "Standing about 7½ feet in hight above the ground, with some carving apparently emblematical on the south face of it". The next is a stone built into the parish Church, "with the words Randolphos Sacerdos inscribed on it lengthwise, and after these, some date, which is illegible". The stone is about 6 feet long and 20 inches in breadth. There was was another stone, which stood on the north side of a small hill called Auchenbradie, called the Earl of Mar's chair, this stone was broken and built into the Mill of Boddam about the year 1828. In addition to these are the remains of several Stone Circles, the best of which is on the farm of Nether Boddam. There are three places of [continued on page 3]

[Junior] Insch 035 The stone at Insch is situated on the farm of Myreton in the Parish of Insch, and is known in the country as "The Picardy Stone". It was dug about in 1856, and was found to stand on a cairn about 6 feet in diameter, and extending about 3 feet below the surface. on the south side of the stone, (on which the figures are cut) and distant from it about 3 feet was found a grave, lying east & west, and about 7 feet in length. It lay at a depth of rather more than 5 feet under the surface: first 6 inches of mould . then 2½ feet of loose stones, and below them about 2½ feet of loose loamy sand. The sides of the grave went down down several feet into a very compact and hard subsoil. No remains of any sort were discovered in the grave, nor was there any sign of its having ever been disturbed before. Among the stones at the top was a very small quantity of the usual black mould, and some of the stones were marked by fire, but these appearances were slight. A Spot called "The Piccardy Heugh" is on the other side of the Hill of Dunnydeer from this stone, on a hill, about ½ a mile to the west of the stone is a Druidical Circle, and others are in the neighbourhood. In April 1647 "the Young Harthill" garrisoned the house of Wardes for the King; but on being besieged, he was forced to surrender it to the parliamentary generals. Middleton and David Lesley. The Scots in the house were set at liberty: there were sixteen Irish taken in it, all of them with the Captain who commanded them, were hanged. OS1/1/41/51 Supposed Site of ST JOHN'S CHAPEL Supposed Site of St. John's Chapel Mr Peter Bettie, Dunnydeer Mr. George Mathieson Dunnydeer Mr. James Stables Dunnydeer 044 Mr. George Mathieson, an intelligent man, whose Father was farm grieve to Dr. [Doctor] Bettie, of Dunnydeer, remembers when a boy about 56 years since, of seeing a great many stones being removed from a slightly elevated piece of ground, somewhat resembling an old grave yard. The soil appeared to be very black, and a luxuriant crop of nettles grew all around the place. A superstitious dread possessed the mindes of the people when passing this place in the night time. The place was then known by the name of "Moine Col Stane." (ie the moss stone where incest had been committed.) but my own opinion regarding the name, that it would rather refer to a few boulder stones a little farther south, where at one time there had also been a moss of considerable extent. The land in the immediate neighbourhood is of a superior quality and is beautifully situated, and exposed to the south and east. On the spot marked as the site of Chapel, The farm grieve has observed that the corn growes far more luxuriant and dies away much earlier than any other part of the field. A great many chips of building are still to be seen on the ground, and it does not require any great flight of the imagination to trace the extent of what might be considered the stance of the Chapel. OS1/1/41/53 CASTLE OF DUNNIDEER (Remains of) Dunnideer Dunnideer Dunnideer Dunnideer Mr. P. Beattie, Dunnydeer, Mr. A. Roger. Jun. [Junior] Insch, Castl. Arch. [Castellated Architecture] of Aberdeenshire, by Sir Andrew Leith Hay Of Rannes K.H. F.R.S.E. Statistical Account of Aberdeenshire. 044 The Castle of Dunnideer, upon the summit of a conical hill, with an elevation of about six hundred feet from the bed of the rivulet at its base, is a conspicuous and picturesque object from nearly every part of the district of Garioch. That the extensive fort, and the more modern tower within its area, are extremely ancient, there can be no doubt. All is conjecture as to the history of the former, and nothing beyond very vague tradition leads to a conclusion as to the date when the latter was constructed. The fort has evidently extended over the whole flat oval summit of the cone, its form, a parallelogram, curved at one extremity, and, in length, about 170 feet by 70. From the state of the ruin, it is impossible to ascertain the dimensions of the wall; but, from existing appearances, it must have been of considerable strength. The materials are vitrified; and, lower down the hill, is distinctly marked a line of circumvallation, similar to that, on a more extensive scale, upon the mountain of Noth, in Strathbogie. The appearance of both is identical, and, it is probable, they were built about the same period, and formed part of a chain of forts, constructed as places of refuge and security, when attacked, to the inhabitants [Continued on page 54]

[Castellated Architecture] of Aberdeenshire, by Sir Andrew Leith Hay Of Rannes K.H. F.R.S.E. Statistical Account of Aberdeenshire. 044 [Continued from page 53] inhabitants of a then barbarous country. Fordoun, and other historians, have recorded that Dunideer was the residence of Gregory the Great, King of Scotland, and that he died there in 897; whether antecedent to the erection of the tower, of which a wall is now standing, or, whether it comprised part of his residence, is left in perfect obscurity. That it must have been for many centuries an uninhabited ruin, appears to be proved by the fact, that, in more recent times, when the other castles in its neighbourhood, now also fallen into decay, are mentioned in history, as the scenes of many events, during the troubles and wars carried on in the North of Scotland, no notice is ever taken of the inmates of Dunnideer, which could not have been the case had it been in the occupation of proprietors during these times. It has been attempted to trace the erection of the tower to the reign of William the Lion, and ascribe it to his brother, David, Earl of Huntingdon and Garioch, but this does not appear to be authenticated. Extracts from The Castellated Architecture of Aberdeenshire, by Sir Andrew Leith Hay of Rannes, K.H., F.R.S.E., (page 22) "The Dundurn, in the Chronicle of St. Andrews, and the Dundurin of the Cronicon Elegiacum, mean the Dunaduine, the well known hill of Dunadeer, in the Garviach, Aberdeenshire, on the summit of this conical mount, there is the remains of An Ancient Castle, which had consisted of a double court of buildings, that appear to have been partly constructed of the ruined ramparts of a still older vitrified fortification, around the summit. The tradition of the country states, that this castle was inhabited by Greg, [Gregory] who therein finished quietly his guilty career. OS1/1/41/58 VITRIFIED FORT [Dunnideer] Vitrified Fort Vitrified Fort Vitrified Fort Chalmers' Caledonia P. [Page] 383. Collections of the Shires Statistical Account 044 "By far the most interesting objects, however, which the parish holds out to Antiquarians, are the ruined fort and tower on the top of the hill of Dunnideer, the former being a fine specimen of what are called vitrified forts, the latter the remnant of a square tower or Castle built within the fort, and partly of fragments of it, covering from 13 to 14 square yards of ground, including the walls, 7 feet in thickness; only one wall, however, standing entire, and it being from 50 to 60 feet in height. As to the fort or enclosure, the subjoined remarks from Culloch's "Highlands and Islands of Scotland, give a sufficiently accurate description of it." "The hill of Dunnideer, having an elevation of about 600 feet from the irregular plain on which it stands, with a steep acclivity all around, has a flat oval summit, which is entirely occupied by the enclosure, so as to form a strong military position. Though much ruined, and consequently obscured, having apparently been used as a quarry for building a more modern Castle in the same spot (the square tower alluded to), it is not difficult to trace either the dimensions of the disposition of the original work. The form is a parallelogram of which one extremity is curved, so as to be nearly semicircular, and its longest side is about 58 yards, the shortest being about 24. At a certain stage down the hill are the well marked traces of a work, which once seems to have encircled the whole. It is a kind of fortification, well known to antiquaries as occurring frequently in the ancient British hill forts, and consists of a single ditch and wall, The materials in the vitrified wall are partly roasted without adhesion, and partly roasted without adhesion, and partly vitrified or glazed. It is easy to see that dark granite forms the vitrified or scorified substances. Wherever stones not capable of vitrification themselves have undergone anything like a similar change, it has been produced by alkali of the wood used in the process. The materials of the hill are chiefly grey granite, a fusible rock, but there are scattered, in the surrounding plain, blocks of a black variety which, from containing hornblende is very fusible."
