OS1/1/37/1 GLASS Glass Glass Glass Glass Glass Glass Glass Glass Philips County Atlas Fullartons Gazetteer Sheriffs List of Parishes New Statl. [Statistical] Account Old Statl. [Statistical] Account Johnstons County Map Oliver & Boyds Almanac Ainslie's Map of Scotland 1789 016 ; 024 ; 025 ; 032 ; 033 The parish of Glass is in the presbytery of Strathbogie and synod of Moray and in the Western Division of the County. It is bounded on the north by the parish of Cairnie, on the east by the parishes of Huntly & Gartly, on the south by the parish of Cabrach in the county of Banff, and on the west by the parishes of Mortlach and Botriphnie in the county of Banff. This parish is partly in the county of Banff and partly in the County of Aberdeen, the portion in the County of Banff contains about 4732 statute acres and forms the southwest portion of the parish, the remainder of the parish which is situated in the County of Aberdeen contains about 7932 statute acres, in which is situated the parish church. There are no detached portions of this parish nor are there any detached portions of any other parish situated within it. "The general surface of the parish is a congeries of hills, partially moorish but prevailingly pastoral, with fine green sward; and is supposed to have derived its name from their verdant appearance, the word "Glass" signifying green. The height of the hills above sea-level probably ranges from 1,200 to 2,000 feet. They look from many points of view to occupy the whole parish; but there lie among them, especially along the Deveron considerable stripes and patches of arable land. The soil is in general a deep loam tolerably early on the river-side; but in those parts which lie at a distance from it, the harvest is very precarious especially in cold wet seasons." Fullarton's Gazetteer.
